Suspect in woman’s kidnapping arrested in Kansas City

Woman said man forced her to take money from bank before fleeing

A man sought in the kidnapping and robbery of a Lawrence woman was arrested Wednesday night in Kansas City, Mo., following a high-speed car chase.

Donald B. Bartsma, 40, is being held in the Clay County, Mo., Jail after he allegedly stole a sport utility vehicle while attempting to kidnap another woman. He allegedly led Kansas City police on a car chase before he was arrested.

Earlier in Lawrence, a man armed with a knife approached a woman in a parking lot in the 3400 block of Iowa Street. Lawrence police say Bartsma is a suspect in that incident.

The Lawrence woman said the man forced her into her car and drove her to a bank where she withdrew money. The suspect then drove south of Lawrence to near Wells Overlook where he got out of the car and fled.

Lawrence police and the Douglas County District Attorney’s office are preparing an arrest warrant for Bartsma. Meanwhile, Bartsma is being held in Clay County on charges of first-degree robbery, armed criminal action, resisting arrest and fleeing to elude an officer. His bond is $100,000.

According to Kansas Department of Corrections records, Bartsma was released from a Kansas prison on Dec. 23 after serving time for burglary in Bourbon County.
