Jury selected for homicide retrial

Opening arguments and testimony were scheduled to begin this morning in Douglas County District Court in the second trial of a man accused in a 2004 Lawrence homicide.

Jury selection began Monday morning and concluded about 5 p.m. in District Judge Jack Murphy’s courtroom.

Prosecutors allege Lafayette Cosby shot Robert Martin several times during an April 4, 2004, party at a south Lawrence apartment complex.

A jury in 2004 convicted Cosby of first-degree murder, but the Kansas Supreme Court in November reversed the conviction and sent it back to Douglas County for a new trial. The majority of justices ruled that errors were made by the Douglas County district attorney’s office in prosecuting the first case and by Murphy.
