Punter commits to Kansas

One of the Kansas University football team’s biggest question marks moving forward may have been answered this weekend.

Rivals.com reported that the Jayhawks received an oral commitment from Alonso Rojas, a 6-foot-3 punter out of Miami who already has Division-I experience.

Rojas punted at Bowling Green in 2006, averaging 35.6 yards per boot. That includes five that went 50-plus yards and 12 inside the 20-yard line. His longest punt was 62 yards.

After that season, Rojas got homesick and moved back to Miami. He attended community college in South Florida and continued to work out, even attending Chris Sailer’s Annual National Kicking Event in Las Vegas last month.

There, KU assistant coach Louie Matsakis was scouting players and noticed Rojas, who also had offers from Oregon State, UNLV and Colorado State.

Kansas offered a scholarship, and Rojas told Sailer he was headed to Lawrence, according to Rivals.

“I’ve seen a lot of great punters this year,” said Sailer, a highly respected kicking coach out of California. “Alonso is one of the best. He was phenomenal in Vegas. He hit the ball as well or better than most of the top guys.”

That’s good news for KU fans, considering the Jayhawks had few options at the position after the graduation of Kyle Tucker last season. When Tucker was struggling, KU turned to backup quarterback Kerry Meier to deliver a key punt earlier in the season. That was in addition to Meier’s duties as a quarterback and wide receiver.

Rojas potentially could fill that void. He didn’t play football in junior college last year, meaning he’ll be a sophomore during the 2008 season.

“I think he’ll come in and be from the middle to the top of the conference in net punting,” Sailer told Rivals. “I’ve seen his film from Bowling Green, and he’s a lot better now than he was then. I think he’s a no-brainer and has all the tools to be a standout at Kansas.”

Kansas now has 20 known commitments for the 2008 class. Four already are on campus, and the rest are set to sign Wednesday, the first day they are allowed to ink letters of intent.

KU coach Mark Mangino will have a signing-day news conference Wednesday afternoon.
