Authorities search for missing inmate

December 27, 2008

Area law enforcement personnel are searching for a missing Douglas County Jail inmate, a spokesman said Friday.

Officials refused to name the inmate, who they said did not return to the facility after a judge granted a temporary leave for Christmas. A judge allowed the inmate to be released from jail from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, when she was ordered to return to custody.

Sheriff’s deputies and Lawrence Police are looking for the individual, said Sgt. Steve Lewis, sheriff’s spokesman.

“The missing inmate is not considered dangerous,” he said in a statement received by e-mail.

Try looking in Hays or Denver - Maybe even Chicago.

bchilcoat 5 years, 12 months ago

I know who it is....does anybody want to know?

carryon 5 years, 12 months ago

I also know who it is. Her name is Candice Amyx. She was arrested for forgery and fraud recently. Why does the jail system allow people who have fled before (as she did) out of jail? Did you know she took her 12 year old son with her? The system is flawed.

fonz73 5 years, 12 months ago

Clarification, please: She took her 12-year-old son the last time she escaped, or on this recent "excursion"?Because if it's the latter, it would call for an Amber Alert.

carryon 5 years, 12 months ago

pywacket: Her last name may cause some embarrasment as some of that family are obvious pillars of the community and others, obviously, are not. fonz72: This isn't the first time she's gone on the run with her 12 year old. They caught her earlier this summer and dropped him off at his brother's house. He never went through the system. It's a hard call. The kid needs his family, but they're all screwed up. Do you know the criteria for an Amber Alert? I never thought of that ...

carryon 5 years, 12 months ago

Thanks for posting the link. It's possible the police don't know that she took the child, since he's not in the system. I'm sure the brothers are protecting their mother and won't report him missing. I'm sure no harm will come to him, as she loves him. However, there's a lot of damage that's being done, psychologically, having him on the run and implying that rules are meant to be broken. It would be nice if law enforcement, and or the judge, would intervene and give this child a stable environment.

Mike Blur 5 years, 12 months ago

Hmmmmm....wonder if the surname (prominent Lawrence family name) had anything to do with DGSO refusing to reveal it?

carryon 5 years, 12 months ago

If so, shame on them. They're bending the rules the same way she is.

Mixolydian 5 years, 12 months ago

Refused to name the escaped inmate?!? What basis under the Kansas Open Records Act does that piece of information fall under as protected? Come on LJ World, why are you allowing your journalistic rights to be trampled on to the public's detriment?

carryon 5 years, 12 months ago

Her last name is AMYX. I've had experiences with this crew (she has 3 or 4 grown kids) and none of them have been good. I truly believe the police department protects them. I'm still stunned that the judge gave her a pass. She's been in jail before, plus she's skipped bond and parole more than once (as recently as this year) and from more than one county in two states. Again, the system is flawed.

GardenMomma 5 years, 12 months ago

"Someone escaped police custody, but we don't want to tell you who it is. Oh...nevermind!"What a waste!

Leslie Swearingen 5 years, 12 months ago

What was the point of putting it in the paper? Or are the police obligated to report when someone goes missing? My granddaughter gave me the DVD "The Presidents Men" for Christmas. It seems to me that the more things change the more they stay the same. A body at rest tends to stay at rest, until it is pushed.

How can a 20 year old have a 12 year old son?

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

The mother is in her 40's.As for her immediate family, they seem to be part of the problem, as well. The whole family is protected, as many of them break the laws. It's a sad situation, because the kids have had a hard life, but they are part of the problem, too. They helped her escape and they allowed her to take her 12 year old son. It would've been nice if someone recognized that this child should be in school and interacting with friends, rather than being schooled by his mother in criminal behavior. I know for a fact that she's taught him how to lift wallets at the pool. He doesn't think twice about it, because he just wants to make her happy. This woman has done nothing but show her sons how to survive by breaking the law and frauding others. It makes me sick.

fonz73 5 years, 11 months ago

I have a sneaking suspicion that the JW is trying to bury this story. I checked in this morning to see what (if any) new developments had taken place, and I couldn't find the original article anywhere in the "latest news/most discussed" section, or anywhere else on the site. I queried for "Authorities search for missing inmate" in the archives section, and nothing popped up. The only way I could find it was by Googling "missing inmate + lawrence ks". And then, miraculously, it appeared briefly in the "most discussed" section after carryon's last comment, only to disappear again. WHAT!?!??!? Someone escapes from jail, and the police won't release any details (name, description, etc.) so the public can help find her. And then the JW not only provides no follow-up, but (deliberately?) takes the story off the site.If carryon is correct in her statements, I sense a cover-up.Correct me if I'm wrong.

fonz73 5 years, 11 months ago

Hmmm. Apparently, the only way to keep this story on the radar is to comment. It has appeared again on the "most discussed". For now.

somebodynew 5 years, 11 months ago

Well, IF this is the person, it is truly amazing a Judge would let her our for "furlough"., and you take notice they don't name the Judge !!! (I can guess, but that would be wrong.)Keep in mind, the police, sheriff, jail had NOTHING to do with her getting out, it was a JUDGE'S ruling !!! They all had no choice. And, if you are not going to print basic details, sex, race, height, weight, why is this a story??? So that you can scare the people - "Oh, there is a criminal on the loose". Wouldn't the PURPOSE of an article like this to make the publc look for the person???? A little hard to do with no description. From the sounds of the comments on this board a lot of the people (like me) know her and would gladly call in if we knew who was missing, as opposed to reading a story about "somebody missing" and having no clue as to who to look for.

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

Well, I can only presume that the posters are right on many counts. If not, why wouldn't 23 comments appear on the "most discussed" link on the home page? I'm not trying to sully anyone's name, but have the information from a very solid source. I am just hoping that someone in authority reads this blog and at leasts looks into the environment her young son is exposed to ...that is presuming she is caught.

fonz73 5 years, 11 months ago

In the interest of keeping this story from going away, I feel I must do my duty and keep this thread going. In order to do so, I guess I will have to throw out some bait.Obama is GOD.Go Israel!OJ didn't do it.Air Supply makes all the stadiums rock.I prefer Jolie over Aniston.I had sex with the Olson twins before they were famous. That should do it :)

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

Your efforts are commendable -- and hilarious! Let's add:Heath Ledger's death was not accidental.Gay marriage should be banned by the Supreme Court.Alex Baldwin should win "Father of the Year."Cloris Leachman was robbed of the title in "Dancing with the Stars."This thread is important to keep going.

fonz73 5 years, 11 months ago

Is that a stab at Alex Baldwin?Oooooooooooooooh. Now I'm pissed. Apparently you've never walked a mile in $300 shoes. Hater.

allateup 5 years, 11 months ago

I'll help by keeping this going too....Pywacket had some excellent questions and J. Kealing you have not answered. Why?

allateup 5 years, 11 months ago

Maybe Mr. Kealing is not working today but surely someone is there to answer the questions?

Sigmund 5 years, 11 months ago

carryon (Anonymous) says… "Again, the system is flawed."A parently flawed by design. FOD's (Friends Of Dolph, members of a certain church or certain clubs) or those in a political position to do the World Company favors get lots of passes from the LJWorld. Or perhaps all this is just a coincidence.

fonz73 5 years, 11 months ago

Considering that there is an (unknown) escapee out wandering the streets, I would think that the JW/Sheriff's Dept./LPD could give us an update...regardless if the suspect might be "not considered dangerous.”

Gina Bailey-Carbaugh 5 years, 11 months ago

WTF......since when do inmates get holiday leave?!? Impeach the judge!!!

fonz73 5 years, 11 months ago

Power to the people! We're currently the no. 1 "most discussed" story! Thanks, Obama.

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

Now let's hope someone makes this their number one priority, Monday morning. Why wasn't more information given? Why didn't LJW insist on more information? (I'm sure the court/jail records are part of open records.) Who signed this woman out of jail? If so, why isn't he/she being held responsible? Her adult children will close ranks and protect her wherabouts. Shoot, I wouldn't be surprised if her escape has been planned for awhile. In all the comments I don't want an important factor to get lost. This woman took her 12 year old son with her!!! My hunch is that the family didn't let the DGSO know that he's gone, too. Too many departments and not enough communication. If the DGSO does know, then why isn't more being communicated to the public?

somebodynew 5 years, 11 months ago

Well, to keep a (somewhat) voice of reason here - and to keep the post going - I will add that there could be two factors at work here as far as public information being released.#1 Lt. Wempe just retired and I am sure whoever is filling in isn't quite up to speed yet.#2 This this the LJW who has NO reporters who actually try to find out information. They don't even cover trials anymore. Much less on a weekend. Give them a break - it is only supposed to be news.

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

I see your point somebodynew, but the DGSO's stance on choosing not to provide a shred of information is still puzzling. Maybe they choose to handle details differently if they feel that the escaped inmate wouldn't harm anyone.

allateup 5 years, 11 months ago

Carryon, isn't there someone who could report the 12 year old missing? If he/she is living with siblings can't grandparents, aunts, uncles........?

somebodynew 5 years, 11 months ago

Carryon - I guess my point wasn't completely clear. I am not sure the DGSO is not providing a shred of information or is the LJW isn't asking any questions. How exactly did the LJW find out about this, if the DGSO is not providing information??? They could have just not said anything at all, then noone (including us) would not know. I think that has happened before. There is more here that a "reporter" would get to.

lawthing 5 years, 11 months ago

Well had her last name been The Yellow House instead of Amyx I bet they would not have protected her Identity! lo!

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

I'm not sure if someone has let the DGSO know about the child or not. As for the other relatives, it's a pretty sad situation. No one else gets involved, except the siblings, who protect their mother. As for me, I've thought about getting more involved, but I'm half afraid to. I have my reasons, but suffice it to say, I feel safer trying to shake trees this way.

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

somebodynew -- in my earlier posting, I was referring to the article, where the LJW reported about the email the DGSO sent informing them of the missing inmate and that "Officials refused to name the inmate." But, I think I understand your point. It's the holiday weekend and the LJW reported the news as shared with them by the DGSO, which is all good -- the sharing of the information and the reporting. However, since the DGSO sent the email, it would have been nice if they would have at least shared a description, if they were hesitant to share a name.

somebodynew 5 years, 11 months ago

carryon - while I respect your concerns about getting involved, there are anon. tip lines to call. Both CrimeStoppers and SRS have lines to call, where you personally don't have to be involved. And I do understand the "refused to name the inmate" part, I just think if someone with more experience in that position had been puttin out the e-mail, there would have been more identifying information. Maybe, maybe not.

some1331988 5 years, 11 months ago

Carryon....---- I just want to know who you think you are? I know her sons personally and they have their issues....but one i know very personally and I'm pretty sure your opinion is completely wrong and you should do your best to quit talking bad about people that you obviously don't know....so in other words... SHUT UP!! but ok glad your life consists of posting on a lawrence newspaper website...congratulations your obviously a winner... I'm not condoning what she did i'm just telling you to watch what you say about the rest of her family that you don't know......your kind of ridiculous......

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

some1331988 - You said I was talking bad about people -- specifically her sons. What exactly did I say that was so offensive to you?

some1331988 5 years, 11 months ago

Her last name is AMYX. I've had experiences with this crew (she has 3 or 4 grown kids) and none of them have been good. And thats a direct quote from you......I really don't know who you are that you supposedly know all of her grown kids....if you know them as well as you do then you probably wouldn't be saying that about all of them....So i really think if you supposedly know so much about everything...do something about it other then being an annonymous trash talker on a website... And you know...maybe you should go get your law degree and do something with your life since you know so much about everything

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

some1331988 - I was talking about my own personal experiences, which haven't been good. That's the truth, not trash talk. If I was going to trash talk, I could go into a lot more detail, believe me. It's too bad you're being so defensive, because the point of my postings was more about my concern for the youngest child. I know that he's loved, but he needs stability -- not hiding out with his mother. Evading the law isn't the way a child should spend his Christmas.

bearded_gnome 5 years, 11 months ago

dunno how far to go with the info posted by posters above. sometimes in the past people post "inside information" on cases and situations, turns out to be complete fakes. but I will say: this is puzzling, based on the info, or lack thereof, in the article! we're told an inmate was released for Christmas day, and hasn't returned, and she is presumed a fugitive. but no name, no description, no car, no address, no place, no potential destination, etc., etc., etc.! completely apart from whether her name is Amyx or Mudd, the Sherrif's dept. spokesman did have contact with somebody at ljworld. but for what? just the information, and the lack of information, in the article makes me wonder how seriously the authorities are looking for her and trying to recapture her!***hey Jonathan Kealing, David Ryan, or somebody at ljworld! get some info on this, put it into the monday paper. sniff out what's going on. who's the judge that ordered the christmas furlough?

some1331988 5 years, 11 months ago

Ok...well i said what i wanted to say and i'm done now....i didn't realize that if you got in a fight in high school it classified you as "no good" for the rest of you life but i guess i was just mistaken. Have fun blogging!

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

some1331988 - I want to add that I said she had 3 or 4 grown children. It's obvious by that statement that I don't know all of them. I was specifically referring to the ones that I know. If you're in a relationship with one that is different, then I hope he does the right thing and helps the authorities as much as he can. Even you said that you don't condone what "she" does. So obviously, you know what I'm talking about. It doesn't take a law degree to care about someone's well-being. Just a heart.

lawthing 5 years, 11 months ago

I know Candy and she is a wonderful person. She is alleged to have written some bad checks. Not exactly Al Capone, or a danger to society. Her family has been through a lot, expecially since Mikes brother Dave Amyx died in the Walmart a few years ago. He was really close to his boys and his death affected the whole family.

lawthing 5 years, 11 months ago

There are a number of controversial stories that keep getting hid and can't be pulled up in the archives. Typically the bloggers comments seem to be the driving force behind these stories disapearance. But you can still find them when you google the titles.

ad26 5 years, 11 months ago

To Miss Carryon,You shouldn't be running your mouth when you aren't even sure how many grown kids she has. As to your comment, all of her immediate family does not protect her and does not break the law. Get your facts straight before running your mouth."As for her immediate family, they seem to be part of the problem, as well. The whole family is protected, as many of them break the laws. It's a sad situation, because the kids have had a hard life, but they are part of the problem, too. "

some1331988 5 years, 11 months ago

ad26.....AMEN! You took the words right out of my mouth!!

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

ad26 - I find it interesting that you think I'm a "Miss." As for your other point, I see what you're saying. I did not mean to imply "all" of her immediate family. So, I apologize for offending you or anyone else who's not involved. However, this acknowledgement does not discount my other points or those of the others on this board.

woodenfleaeater 5 years, 11 months ago

ad26 : How are you related to the escapee?

ad26 5 years, 11 months ago

Why did they let her out to begin with??? Come on she's run before, so let's give a round of applause to the idiots who released her!!! She's long gone by now.

thatsgreat 5 years, 11 months ago

Carryon- If you have so much to say about the family and are releasing the inmates public information to the entire city of lawrence and state of kansas, then how do you know her and why wont you allow the public to know how you have all of this wonderful information? As for the boys, how do you know them and why do you say that you have had experiences with all of them? Are you related to the family somehow? And also, where do you think it's your business to reveal personal information about a very well known family in lawrence that may cause embarrassment to her entire family? Where do you get off doing that?

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

thatsgreat - I'm starting to lose patience. Read my postings again. Reread them if necessary. Maybe it will start to sink in. Let me see if I can help about the most pressing question - I did not have bad experiences with "all of them." All of my "experiences" have been bad. Not that "all the brothers" are bad. As for my identity, mine is as anonymous as yours. I may be related. I may have been a former employer. I may be a victim of one of your mother's scams. I may be a former landlord. I may be an inmate or the friend of an inmate. I may be a friend of a friend of a friend. (Are you starting to catch my drift?) I could be just about anybody, but does it honestly matter how I have the information, if what I said is true?? You also stated that I "released public information." Hmmm...let me think about that ...I released it because it's PUBLIC?!? The district court, the LPD and the DGSO all have a public website or information desk. Try doing a search by the last name "Amyx." You'll find all the information you could ever want to know. And as for causing embarrassment to her entire family, I'm pretty sure that Candice Amyx has done that all by herself. Here's the newest link in case you missed the update:http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2008/dec/29/douglas-county-authorities-still-looking-inmate-wh/Seriously, quit worrying about being embarrassed and your own selfish agenda. Try to see what's happened for what it is. Only one person is responsible for four counts of forgery and one count of theft. And,that's not me!

smartmomma 5 years, 11 months ago

She is long gone...thanks to those overpaid idiots in the dg county legal system. AD26 I am soooo glad you have realized she is always going to be the same. Love you

whatifeelfyi 5 years, 11 months ago

I need to speak up in defense of Judge Murphy. What he did was a very kind, humane, trusting thing to allow Candi out to spend the day with her family on Christmas. I am sure the rules were laid down and she was trusted to comply with them. She made the choice not to. She should suffer the consequences as I am sure there are many others the the judge has offered this opportunity to that did not take advantage of his kindness as she did. I just hope, Judge Murphy, that her actions won't harden your heart and you will keep that trust towards others. You once did for my son and I and he was very young. Thanks to you he has never been in jail again.

XEPCT 5 years, 11 months ago

some1331988 ~I think you should google the contraction "you're" as opposed to your usage of "your," before you continue your internet odyssey.

carryon 5 years, 11 months ago

At least those "overpaid idiots" have a heart and were trying to extend some Christmas spirit. The only "idiot" in this incident is the one who keeps getting in trouble, keeps choosing to spend more and more time in jail and keeps bringing grief and shame on her family. You'd think her boys have dealt with enough without adding more trouble to their plate. whatifeelfyi - I'm glad to hear that your son learned from his mistakes. Everyone makes them. It's the one the keep repeating them that have serious problems.

Or the lamest because you read through 72 posts to find 2 mistakes i'm sorry.....i'm truely sorry and i'm apologizing to everyone out there, i'm sorry i misspelled something!!! It wasn't the first time i've done it and it probably won't be the last....and in some defense of myself....I was so pissed off when i was writing that post that i probably didn't give a crap how i spelled anything so i'm impressed i only spelled 2 words wrong!! But thanks for taking the time to notice!!!

Sigmund 5 years, 11 months ago

whatifeelfyi (Anonymous) says…"I need to speak up in defense of Judge Murphy."Couldn't agree more. We will always read of those who get a break and take advantage of others but we rarely, if ever, read of those who were given a break and then lived up to their commitments and whose life was change for the better. Candice will be caught and in the meantime will be constantly looking over her shoulder while she is on the run. In the end she will suffer the consequences.

some1331988 5 years, 11 months ago

thatsgreat-- if you know why don't you say because i know quite a few people that would like to know!!! Since she/he is such a know it all!
