Hearing scheduled for Jan. 13 for Topeka woman accused of hitting police officer during car chase

A preliminary hearing will be held Jan. 13 in the case of a Topeka woman accused of striking a Lawrence police officer during a high speed car chase earlier this month.

Douglas County prosecutors will present some of the evidence they have against Barbara Jo Schnegelsiepen, 27. District Judge Peggy Kittel will then decide whether there is enough evidence to try Schnegelsiepen on 11 charges, including two felony counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.

Schnegelsiepen appeared for a short hearing Tuesday when her attorney, John Johnson, asked Kittel to reduce his client’s bond from $350,000 to $100,000. Schnegelsiepen’s family was willing to put their house up as bond collateral, Johnson said.

“The charges are significant but I think $100,000 would be sufficient,” Johnson said.

The judge denied the request. Schnegelsiepen remains in the Douglas County Jail.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Dave Melton argued against the reduction. He said evidence and testimony to be presented will show that Schnegelsiepen intentionally drove at the officer and then corrected her approach as the officer tried to get out of the way. Schnegelsiepen also allegedly drove at other law enforcement vehicles and passenger cars, forcing some of them off the road, Melton said. He called her a danger to the public as well as to police officers.

Schnegelsiepen was arrested Dec. 2 after allegedly burglarizing two Lawrence homes and then leading law enforcement officers on a chase into rural areas of the county west of Lawrence.
