Law enforcement report

A fire that caused the evacuation of Kansas University’s McCollum Residence Hall on Saturday was accidental, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Chief Mark Bradford said Sunday.

Bradford said the blaze was sparked by smoking materials that were disposed of improperly in a 5-gallon gas can.

At 6:17 Saturday evening, heavy smoke was reported on the ninth floor of the building’s west wing. No injuries were reported, and the smoke dissipated quickly.

Bradford estimated damages to be less than $100.

Burglaries and thefts reported

• Two men were arrested and charged with stealing stereo faceplates and miscellaneous items from vehicles early Saturday morning.

William Michael Middleton, 18, Lawrence, and Jesse Lee Whitewells, 21, Overbrook, were arrested in the 2400 block of Missouri Street. The two men were working together, but each was charged with his own vehicle burglary.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said that two separate people in the area had reported lost items from their vehicles. A nearby resident was able to give a description of one of the suspects. Police returned items to their owners and are trying to locate the owner of another stereo faceplate recovered in the incident.
