Lawrence police seek suspect in robbery of Midwest Regional Credit Union
Man holds up credit union, escapes on foot
Police are continuing their search for a man suspected of robbing Midwest Regional Credit Union on Friday morning along Sixth Street, a few blocks west of downtown Lawrence.
The suspect is described as a white male in his 20s, wearing jeans, a blue or gray hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses. Police say he’s 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-5, and had left the credit union on foot, headed south, carrying an undisclosed amount of money.
Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Bill Cory said no weapon was displayed. Investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation were called to the scene, and by noon were inside the credit union.
Cory said officers have notified nearby schools.
The man is suspected of robbing the credit union at 1015 W. Sixth St.
A witness told authorities that a purple, four-door Chrysler may be involved.
Dispatchers received a call about the robbery at 10:18 a.m. Friday.
Liz Prosser, a part-time teller at the credit union, knows all three women who were working inside at the time of the robbery.
Prosser later spoke with her manager by phone, and learned that the robber entered the credit union alone, acting agitated, and demanded money. The robber didn’t show any weapon, but apparently led employees to believe that he had one.
“My manager told him, ‘No, you need to leave,’ ” Prosser said, relaying the story. “The she said she got socked in the face.”
A teller then handed over the money, with a dye pack, Prosser said. The man then left.
Prosser isn’t sure whether she’ll be reporting for work today for her scheduled afternoon shift. Police and the FBI had the place sealed off; authorities even turned away a Garda armored car, with uniformed employees making a scheduled cash delivery.
Prosser knows one thing that would make her feel better once she returns to work.
“We need a security guard,” she said.
