Cancer drug research firm to lease space at Med Center
BioTarget, a Nebraska company specializing in cancer drug research, intends to lease space on the Kansas University Medical Center campus.
The company, which specializes in creating drugs for cancer treatments, is heading to Kansas City, Kan., with the help of the center’s life-science incubator for growing small businesses.
Steven Geiger, senior deputy director and CFO of the KU Medical Center Research Institute, said the KU Med Center would lease 1,300 square feet of lab and office space to the company for about $25,000 annually.
The new company is expected to generate 13 jobs and $1 million in local investment in the economy.
The life-science incubator is part of an ongoing effort to attract up-and-coming companies to the area, Geiger said, and allows them to share equipment and resources with the medical center.
The agreement benefits the KU Med Center with faculty recruitment, Geiger said, noting that faculty will occasionally go from the academic institution to a start-up business on campus.
Companies will also occasionally hire faculty to perform some short-term research, as well, Geiger said.
“It’s a community benefit,” he said, noting that some companies have grown beyond the walls of labs at the Med Center to other parts of the area. “These companies need a place to start.”
BioTarget intends to begin moving into the space early next year, Geiger said.
