KU’s Vespers concert looks to its past to inspire its future

Call it retro vespers.

Steeped in tradition, the 84th annual Kansas University Holiday Vespers is drawing from the past in hopes of harking back to the days when the program was in Hoch Auditorium. And, to help usher in the nostalgia, the program will use a new medium — a video presentation.

“What is new this year, is the old,” said Dina P. Evans, coordinator for career services for KU’s School of Fine Arts.

Holiday Vespers will be at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lied Center. Tickets cost $12.50 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens.

The newly appointed choral director Paul Tucker is at the helm of this year’s performance, which will feature the KU Symphonic Choir and KU Symphony Orchestra. With the new director comes a new feel, but also a reflection on the old, Evans said.

“I think we want to show we understand where we’ve come from and also that we are working to build a new tradition,” Evans said.

Inspiration for this year’s program was uncovered in the Spencer Research Library archives. Along with old photos, vesper programs that date back to the 1950s and press releases even older were found.

To kick off the program, a video presentation set to music will show old photos and footage of former choirs. The audience also will be treated to shots of the campus’ winter beauty and a behind-the-scenes look at the effort it took to produce this year’s program.

As for the music, expect to hear a mix of the traditional with the less familiar. There will be the holiday medley of “Joy to the World,” “Silent Night,” “O Christmas Tree” and “Silver Bells.” The program also features the lesser known “Calypso Carol” and “Umoja,” a traditional Kwanzaa song.

Meanwhile, the program will include small ensembles playing before the main performance. Saxophone music will greet those prior to the concert in the Seymour Gallery, and organ recitals can be heard at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Bales Organ Recital Hall, adjacent to the Lied Center.

In addition to the Holiday Vespers, the seventh annual Jazz Vespers will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lied Center. For that performance, tickets cost $12.50 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens.
