Lawrence man sentenced to two months in jail

A 45-year-old Lawrence man will serve 60 days in jail and spend the remainder of a two-year sentence on supervised parole, a Douglas County judge ruled on Thursday.

During a September trial, a jury found Samuel Guy guilty of battery, domestic battery and criminal restraint, all misdemeanors. The victims were his then live-in girlfriend and her 8-year-old daughter.

Prosecutors said the incident occurred in February after Guy returned home following a night of drug use. The girl testified in the trial and wrote a statement for Chief Assistant District Attorney Amy McGowan to read to Judge Paula Martin prior to sentencing.

“Sam was nice on the outside, mean on the inside,” the girl wrote. “I didn’t do anything to Sam, he just hurt me.”

The girl also wrote that she is afraid all the time and has to check rooms to make sure Guy isn’t there before she will sit down.

Martin outlined a series of requirements Guy must meet during his parole, including getting counseling for anger issues and drug addiction treatment. If he fails to meet the requirements, he will be returned to jail.
