Water usage discussion on tap

When it comes to nonrenewable resources, water might need to be added to a list that includes coal and oil.

That’s why Rex Buchanan, deputy director of the Kansas Geological Survey, will lead a talk and discussion about water in Kansas at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Kansas University Natural History Museum.

In some areas of Kansas, water is being used far faster than it could ever be replaced naturally, Buchanan said. That already is affecting the agricultural economy of the state, he said.

Buchanan’s talk, “Water on the High Plains: Struggles and Stories from Kansas,” is part of the museum’s monthly “Wild Science” series. Taking place the first Wednesday of each month, the series offers an opportunity for the public to ask questions directly to researchers in an informal setting.
