McCain taps Alaska governor as VP running mate
Just hours after the Democratic National Convention wrapped up, Republican candidate John McCain his pick for Vice President... Enlarge video
Election 2008
In-depth coverage of the candidates and the issues, all leading up to the Aug. 5 primary and the Nov. 4 general election.
On the street
What do you think about McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate?
She sounds good to me. I think he’s doing something smart by picking someone who is really pretty different from him politically and also by picking a woman. I think it will be good for his campaign.
DAYTON, OHIO John McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a maverick conservative with less than two years in office, as his vice presidential running mate Friday in a startling choice as the Republican National Convention drew near.
At a raucous rally in the swing state of Ohio, McCain introduced Palin as the political partner "who can best help me shake up Washington and make it start working again for the people who are counting on us."
"I am honored," she said moments later, the first Republican woman chosen for national office.
Palin has built her political career in large measure by taking on fellow Republicans.
In a fast-developing presidential campaign, McCain made his selection six days after his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, named Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, as his running mate.
The contrast between the two announcements was remarkable - Obama, 47, picked a 65-year-old running mate with long experience in government and a man whom he said was qualified to be president.
On his 72nd birthday, McCain chose a 44-year-old running mate who until recently was the mayor of small-town Wasilla, Alaska - and made no claim she was ready to sit in the Oval Office.
It wasn't a point lost on Obama's campaign.
"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency," Adrianne Marsh, a spokeswoman for Obama, said in a written statement.
Unlike Biden, who attacked McCain sharply in his debut last week, Palin was indirect in her initial attempts to elevate McCain over Obama.
"There is only one candidate who has truly fought for America and that man is John McCain," she said as the Arizona senator beamed. McCain was a prisoner of war for more than five years in Vietnam.
McCain trails Obama in the polls among women voters, and Palin moved quickly to remedy that.
She mentioned that she followed in the footsteps of Geraldine Ferraro, who was the Democratic vice presidential running mate in 1984, and referred favorably to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who drew 18 million votes in her unsuccessful run against Obama for the Democratic nomination.
"But it turns out the women of America aren't finished yet and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all," she said.
Republicans said that McCain hoped to blunt Obama's message of political change with his pick, and it appeared likely she could remove all doubt about her home state in the fall campaign.
Obama has targeted Alaska and its three electoral votes, one of several he hoped to turn competitive in the fall despite its long tradition of voting Republican.
Palin has a strong anti-abortion record, and her selection was praised warmly by social conservatives whose support McCain needs to prevail in the campaign for the White House.
"It's an absolutely brilliant choice," said Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University School of Law. "This will absolutely energize McCain's campaign and energize conservatives," he predicted.
With his pick, McCain passed over more prominent contenders like Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, as well as others such as former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, whose support for abortion rights might have sparked unrest at the convention that opens Monday in St. Paul, Minn.
The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama derives from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.
Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.
At 44, she is younger than two of McCain's seven children.
She is three years Obama's junior, as well - and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.
In its formal announcement, the campaign pointed to her powers as head of the Alaska National Guard and the mother of a soldier herself as evidence that she "understands what it takes to lead our nation..."
McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like 1988, when little known Sen. Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.
A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, Palin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, population 6,500, until she became governor.
Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.
She became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.
More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.
Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.
Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.
She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.
She had earned stripes - and enmity - after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.
Her husband, Todd Palin, is part Yup'ik Eskimo, and is a blue-collar North Slope oil worker who competes in the Iron Dog, a 1,900-mile snowmobile race. The couple lives in Wasilla. They have five children, the youngest of whom was born in April with Down syndrome.

duplenty:Don't confuse being investigated for being ethics commissioner. Palin, while probably not my #1 choice for VP, resigned as Ethics Commissioner in Alaska because the Republicans were ignoring internal corruption, and Palin didn't want to be a political hack that only went after Dems. She has the highest approval rating of any governor in the US (high '80's), is a true conservative, and has a son about to deploy to Iraq. Plus, she is a bad@ss. She used to be a commercial fisherman, was point guard for her state championship basketball team in HS, and flies a float plane. And she was runner up for Miss Alaska!

What a revealing choice each of the two candidates has made. Obama went out and got the very best person he could find. McCain pandered to his supposed religious base with this piece of fluff. Will anyone in America seriously believe that he made any effort to find someone truly qualified to step in when he dies or slips in to full-blown dementia. Why not just pick Huckabee?

About ten days ago, I started thinking Palin would be the perfect choice for McCain. That ticket isn't getting my vote, but it was the smartest move McCain's made in this campaign. If it had been Romney or Pawlenty, Obama wins by 8. As long as Palin can stay clear of the corruption charges that seem epidemic among AK Republicans, it's still Obama, but only by 2.

He needs to fool enough of the moderate & independent vote to carry him across the finish line. This is not the move that will get him that support. Yet another McCain misjudgment. Obama plastered him last night in his speech by pointing out that it was not worth betting on the 10% of McCain that differs from the Republican right wing. When Palin learned that only the Board of Agriculture and Conservation could appoint Creamery Board members, she simply replaced the entire membership of the Board of Agriculture and Conservation. The new board, led by businesswoman Kristan Cole, reversed the decision to close the dairy. The new board approved milk price increases offered by the dairy in an attempt to control fiscal losses, even though milk from Washington was already offered in Alaskan stores at lower prices. In the end, the dairy was forced to close, and the state tried to sell the assets to pay off its debts but received no bids.–––––––––––––––––––––––—So much for fiscal conservatism.

An AP article states the following:”In its formal announcement, the campaign pointed to her powers as head of the Alaska National Guard and the mother of a soldier herself as evidence that she “understands what it takes to lead our nation…”The statement coming by way of formal announcement, no doubt, because they could not find anyone able to keep a straght face long enough to utter this bit of foolishness.

I guess as loyal Republicans we all have an obligation to keep our chins up and try to believe that McCain somehow has a chance, though. The pundits will still try to pretend that this race is going to be close and it couldn't hurt for us loyal Republican LJ-W posters to try and do the same.

How do those on the right, who have been “foaming at the mouth” as Tom puts it over experience, now do a complete 180 and throw their support behind someone who has only been governor for two years in one of the least populated states. Here is Palin's experience:Runner up for Miss Alaska (I kid you not, she is a former beauty contestant.)Degree in Journalism from University of Idaho.Served two terms on city council of Wasilla, Alaska, then served as the town's mayor. Wasilla - population of 5,470. Defeated in bid as Lietuenant Governor in 2002.Elected Governor in 2006. And this is the person that could be one heart beat away from being President, serving under the 72 year old McCain, who would be the oldest incumbent President ever. Wow! Simply, wow! Obama / Biden!

Telling her supporters throughout the last couple of months that she would make a great vice president and she definitely should be someone considered ….. then the Obama campaign doesn't even bother to seriously consider her for Vice President. He's totally missing the point. Obama's campaign, whatever you think of his political positions, is historic because he's running and it ISN'T about race. So McCain responds by saying, “I guess I have to add a different sort of minority to my ticket to compete?” Jeez. Talk about setting women back. The good news is that this is the only woman Republican they could come up with (because there are so few in power), and it makes the whole thing all the more transparent, which only makes McCain look bad.

“No vetting of Hillary for VP.”What would be the point of “vetting” her? After 8 years as first lady of Arkansas, 8 years as first lady of the US, however many years she's now been in the Senate, and a long run as the one-time favorite for the Democratic presidential nomination, she's as fully vetted as anyone can be. I suspect she doesn't want to the VP nomination. I think she, rightly, sees staying in the Senate as a more powerful position. And if Obama loses, she will be the favorite for 2012.

I am very concerned. McCain is not going to draw from too many of the Clintonites because she is SUCH a Pro-Lifer. Most of those women were leftist feminists and because she's such a hard-liner, it's going to be tough to pull them away. Also, being a Creationist in America right now is not such a wise position, especially as a politician. It's good that she's tough on ethics, but I'm also concerned about the fact that she fired her sister's husband because they were divorcing. Also, McCain's best arguement against Obama regarding his experience kind of gets swept under the rug here. This is NOT a slam dunk for McCain and I really wish he would've gone with Pawlenty. Republicans, don't drink too much of the Palin/Republican koolaid until you fully understand her. Alaska , due in large part to Republican corruption has in recent years come to be regarded as one of the most corrupt of the states in the union. Lots of oil dollars, corrupting lobbyists, special interest groups, legislation mark-ups galore! Remember “The Bridge to Nowhere” also the Republican backed and federally funded, foreign owned Alyeska resort in Girdwood. Corruption in U.S. Republican Senator Ted Stevens (now under federal indictment), also his son in Alaska State Government; not to mention Sarah's problems! Heavyhandedness, missuse of govenrment transportation and services during her run for Governor. Additionally, the ongoing investigation in the firing of a State Official because of a divorce issue in her family. This gal has a lot of baggage for her short political life; let the digging begin. Also, she was mayor of Wasilla, a town north of Anchorage that is trying to replace Juneau as the State Capitol. Wasilla is not much!!!, a couple of strip malls a Walmart and a scramble of housing! Hardly a mayoral center! I've been there!!!

Tom: “A. She's just the VP pick” – to the oldest incumbent presidential nominee ever!As far as having about as much experience as Obama, lets go ahead and pretend that this is true (and it isn't). How much have conservatives complained about Obama's apparent lack of experience? Now conservatives want someone one heartbeat away from the presidency because of her experience of one and one-half years as governor of the third lowest populated states (the Phoenix metropolitan area where I live has five times as many people as the entire state of Alaska) and her experience as mayor of a town one-sixth the size of Leawood, Kansas? The Republicans just tossed the experience argument right out the window in what appears to be a silly move to try and snag Hillary supporters, as if Hillary supports only liked her for her gender. Hillary supporters aren't big on beauty queen creationists.

“This is NOT a slam dunk for McCain and I really wish he would've gone with Pawlenty. My fellow Righties, we're in for a fight.”One wonders why he was passed over. The only knock on him was supposedly his small state governor lack of foreign policy experience. Then McCain goes out and picks someone even less qualified. There must be a serious skeleton there, or he turned McCain down. Imagine the humiliation if that's what it turns out being. The guy bails after seeing Obama's tour d'force last night & McCain has to scramble with the also rans. Also, what a fumbled opportunity for McCain if he really is picking her to get the woman vote. Why not announce her prior to the Democratic convention and really stir up the Hillary/Obama controversy. That's all the media talked about the first 3 days anyway, imagine if McCain had been smart enough to poke at the situation with his female pick & provided the unhappy Clinton campers with a female to gravitate toward. I think the true answer is probably as stated by the prior poster. This is an attempt to up the ante of the first black nominee with a token minority of his own. Obama earned his way, of course, by fighting to the end with the formidable Clinton. The Snow Bunny does not appear to have any remarkable achievements to her credit.

a) Alaskan politics are very different from those of most other states. Mike Gravel aspired to have political influence, left the east coast for Alaska, and quickly and easily rose to the U.S. Senate. Stevens has been there for years, never facing much of a challenge or ever being threatened by a fairly apathetic constituency. Then you've got the Murkowski dynasty. Very easy to rise to power and retain it in Alaska. b) Who would've ever thought that one could be a vice presidential nominee with only a Bachelor's in Communications from the not-so-prestigious University of Idaho.c) It looks like the Republicans are almost treating this as some sort of a rebuilding year/election, figuring there's nothing to lose in throwing someone like Palin on a doomed ticket. Only an extremely loyal, Obama-fearing Republican could pretend to be optimistic enough to think that McCain has any chance in this election.

McCain has 176 such votes. Obama's chore is to get 10 votes from the 102 that are currently too close to lean one way or the other. I highly doubt he will fail to do so. Certainly this pick today will not help McCain. All it does is secure the right wing loon vote, which McCain has to have to be competitive. It alienates most of the undecided, independent voters. Obama will win enough of them in the States still in play to carry the day.

I don't know who scares me more in this election McCain or his VP selection. She is the govenor of Alaska, the state that is pretty much run by the big oil companies. So does this mean that if McCain becomes president will we ever get away from our dependency on oil. I am intrested how much the big oil companies will add to their McCain campaign contribution now that they know that she is running. If they keep giving the cantidates money we will keep giving them our national parks to destroy and keep giving them massive tax breaks, so that they can continue to make record profits and people like me wonder how much more money groceries and fuel will cost this month. At this point in time I have trouble believing that this country will be able to continue as we know it when someone who makes $5 million a year is considered “middle class”. So does that make my wife and myself are lower class when she is a teacher and I am a nurse. Some day I would like to send my kids to college. The way this country is going we are likely to be in a third world country Our leaders need to pull their heads out and realize that they need to pull thier heads out and change how things work in Washington, so that people like me can survive on $60 thousand a year. Just courious does that make me lower class according to McCain?

I'd like to point out that I was born in Alaska. I lived in Wasilla immediately after my birth, but I wasn't born there because the town is so small that it doesn't have a hospital and you can drive through it in less than 10 minutes. I'm not sure how she rose to power for governor, but she's been governor of Alaska for only two years. I'm sure Alaska's location near, well, part of Russia will definitely help her handle the Russia/Georgia fiasco.Holy fruitcake!I think I'd love to have dinner with her (she's seems very interesting), but for VP of a man who is 72? This will severly hurt McCain. My mother, a life long republican in her 70's, called me laughing. A couple of hard core republicans in my office only had words that I can't use on here when I told them the news. McCain is just trying to pander to the Evangelicals and hoping he can get a few Hillary supporters. Very few Hillary supporters would vote for someone like Palin. The right wingers on here are always acting as they are today, so you can just go ahead and keep saying how there's no way Obama can now win. But you will have to face reality soon. Palin will look like a fool debating Biden because there won't be a teleprompter there for her to read from. Biden is a great debater. Those who claim that Obama doesn't have enough experience need to look at how much experience the greatest president (Lincoln) had when he ran for prez. Thanks McCain for chosing an unexperienced, corrupt person for your running mate who is obviously putting herself above her family and special needs baby.

Unusual choice. We'll see if it works out. I am confused. If the selection of this particular woman is “tokenism,” how will we ever have a female as a running mate? Would not the selection of Hillary been only to appease her supporters and not based on her “experience” and talents? All running mates are selected on whose votes they can garner (With the possible exception of Cheney. Who could possibly support Mr. Personality) This choice adds even more to a terrific political discussion.

One is reminded of his riveting questions Biden asked during the Clarence Thomas investigation. Obama simply brings forth the same old tired and failed policies of the past. Energy policy from Jimmy Carter. Bill Clinton's view of the world that resulted in more terror attacks against the U.S. than any other administration. Obama picks the liberal version of McCain for a VP, an old white guy who has been in Washington for decades and has strong foreign policy experience. Now McCain pick the conservative version of Obama for his VP, a young Washington outsider from a historically discriminated against group who is inexperienced. Many of the arguments Republicans have been using against Obama are now being used by Democrats against Palin, and vice versa. You might be surprised that some women are actually interested in other things than abortion. Some actually question how you take money from the companies that create jobs, thereby raising the cost of goods and services, yet, somehow these same companies create new jobs. Some women actually question that. Others question should some one that has only been in the senate one term and spent one and half of those years running for office, is qualified in world affairs. But you may be right….women just vote against women, because they are loyal to Hillary. LOL!

Interesting you think women are so blinded by loyalty. But you may be right:.women just vote against women, because they are loyal to Hillary. LOL!=============================I can only presume that was directed towards me. I am not so naive as to think that abortion is the only issue that matters to women. I merely point out that a good number of Hillary supporters tend to be more in the feminist mold, which as a general rule regards abortion as paramount to nearly all else. There's no way in hell that crowd jumps ship to Palin just because she's a woman; hell, they probably think she's a traitor to the cause.

Alaska lawmakers are investigating whether Palin abused her power in firing a public safety commissioner. Lawmakers say they want to know whether Palin was mad at the commissioner for not firing an Alaska state trooper who went through a messy divorce and ongoing child custody battles with Palin's sister.”If true, she fits in nicely with all the rest of the corrupt Republicans from Alaska.

Dweezil222:”There's no way in hell that crowd jumps ship to Palin just because she's a woman; hell, they probably think she's a traitor to the cause.”No surprise. If it was the equally inexperience Sebelius liberals would be saying how important this is for women and how historic this election is. But the truth is liberal feminists don't really care about women being elected, or equality for women, they only care about their agenda. And if you are a woman and you don't agree with them, you are not “really a woman.” The same attacks were used against Obama during the primaries claiming he wasn't “black enough”, and against Clarence Thomas during his senate hearing. Liberals think they have a monopoly on promoting equality, women and minority rights. It is just a special interest ploy to push their agenda. Bush appointed the last two Secretaries of State who happened to be African American, and the current one is also female. Have the Democrats ever had an African American as Secretary of State? But I guess that doesn't count because they don't really represent the minority community. What a bunch of bull.

Mayor of a town of around 6,700 and governor for less than two years in a state that has a smaller population than the city of Austin, Texas, and fewer people than at least 15 cities in our nation, and she is currently under investigation for possible abuse of power in firing case. She gained attention for publicizing ethical violations by state **Republican Party leaders.**http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_PalinHighlights of Governor Palin's tenure include a successful push for an ethics bill, and also **shelving pork-barrel projects** supported by fellow **Republicans.** After federal funding for the Gravina Island Bridge project that had become a nationwide symbol of wasteful earmark spending was lost, Palin decided against filling the over $200 million gap with state money.http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/09/22/alaska.bridge.ap/In 2007, Palin had an approval rating often above 90%. http://weeklystandard.com/Content/Pub… poll published by Hays Research on July 28, 2008 showed Palin's approval rating at 80%. http://www.haysresearch.com/oc072508…. she isn't afraid to go against her own party leaders, she beat both the Democratic and Republican Governors in one election during a year where Republicans got slaughtered, she is serious about ethics reform even when it hurts her own party, cuts wasteful spending on worthless projects, her popularity is higher than any other governor, senator, congressman, or president (other than possibly Reagan back in the day) that I have ever heard of, and she is hotter than Obama.Nope, there is nothing to her and a terrible choice. Really sorry. And I hear people saying they're going to vote for McCain simply because he is more experienced than Obama. Well, it says in the article that McCain is 72 years old. We probably have a higher chance of the VP needing to take over with him than anyone in the past 50 years. He's really pretty old. She has less experience than Obama, a person with African heritage, who beat a former and very popular first lady for the Democratic presidential nomination. I think Obama has at least proven something by accomplishing that feat.

Palin has the beginnings of a very nice resume— while his opponents might say the same about Obama, their histories are hardly equivalent. After more than 4 years of intense national scrutiny, I don't think it's at all partisan to say that Obama has seriously demonstrated his ability to serve as president. Palin has not, and there is no way she can do so in the two months left till the election. Her selection as VP candidate shows a serious lack of judgement on the part of McCain.

Sarah Palin: Mayor of a town of 6,500 for four years and a first term governor of a state with just 670,000 people. And she is already under investigation for abuse of power. Let that sink in. Mayor of a town for four whole years whose entire population couldn't fill even half of Allen Fieldhouse, and governor for less than 2 years of a state with a smaller population than cities such as Austin, Texas, or Columbus, Ohio. And one year to an appointed job on a state's ethics panel, which she quit because she claimed she couldn't get people to work with her. Yet Asbestos calls us the idiots and morons for questioning this decision. Um, okay. And Asbestos, I never said a college education qualifies anyone or signifies vast intelligence. I just compared histories. I pointed out that Obama, after receiving his degree in Political Science, got his Harvard law degree and was editor of the Harvard Law Review — no task for the unintellectual. Palin got a degree in communications and became a tv sportscaster. Compare it how ever you would like. From what I have seen so far, Palin is in no way qualified to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. No way, no how. Obama / Biden! McCain has just made the choice that much easier.

I forgot Obama is governor of dreamland???????During the Primary, I liked Obama. Since he picked Biden, I will not vote for him. Oh by the way, my grandmother called (she is 80 years old and a democrat). She let me know, whe isn't voting for Obama either.

“Palin got a degree in communications and became a tv sportscaster. Compare it how ever you would like.”And she got her degree at the University of Idaho, a school whose main claim to fame through the mid eighties was a drinking age of 19 in the State. She did not get a great education there. There was a real University 9 miles across the Washington border with a far superior Communications Department - Washington State University (where Edward R. Murrow & Keith Jackson got Communications degrees.)

Barak Obama was an Illionis Senator for 7 years and a US Senator since 2005 which is about 3 years as 2008 is not quite a full year yet, a position he “won” by default by invalidating all his Democratic opposition off the ballot, he was the only choice on the ballot.Palin has this “experience”“Palin was elected governor in 2006 after defeating incumbent governor Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary and former Democratic governor Tony Knowles in the general election. She was the youngest person, and the first woman, to be elected governor of Alaska. Before becoming governor, Palin served two terms on the Wasilla, Alaska, City Council from 1992 to 1996, and was elected and re-elected mayor of Wasilla for two three-year terms in 1996 and 1999. She also ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2002.”And she was on the Ethics commission:”Governor Murkowski appointed Palin Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission,[17] where she served from 2003 to 2004 until resigning in protest over what she called the “lack of ethics” of fellow Alaskan Republican leaders, who ignored her whistleblowing complaints of legal violations and conflicts of interest.[18][3] After she resigned, she exposed the state Republican Party's chairman, Randy Ruedrich, one of her fellow Oil & Gas commissioners, who was accused of doing work for the party on public time, and supplying a lobbyist with a sensitive e-mail.[19] Palin filed formal complaints against both Ruedrich and former Alaska Attorney General Gregg Renkes, who both resigned; Ruedrich paid a record $12,000 fine.[3]”That is a WHOLE lot more executive experience than the Democratic Party Leader Barak Obama.

Satirical, I agree that one of the goals of feminism has been not just that exceptional women get advancement over unqualified men, but that women of marginal skills will be promoted as easily as men with marginal skills. However, while this is new for Republicans, I can't get all that worked up about a woman being named as VP candidate — we Dems covered that one some time ago. However, nice twist of my own question, so I will give it an honest answer — as I see it (not all will agree, of course). I would argue that being involved in some level of government beyond mayor of a town of 6,500 and governor for less than two years in a state with a population smaller than good sized city would be necessary. If not, other background that indicates the ability to do more is important. Her education isn't in politics, we certainly can't count her time spent as a sportscaster following her primary college schooling as viable experience. If she had been mayor of a major city, perhaps, but her political experience is primarily dealing with a town of 6,500. She was appointed to a state ethics panel, then quit after one year — is it because she was ineffective as a communicator and couldn't get people to work with her, or are we to just take her word for it that the system was too corrupt so she gave up trying? Either way, she quit rather than following through to accomplish what needed to be done. Governor for 1.5 years of a state with a tiny population also hardly qualifies her, although at least it is a start. Too bad she is already under investigation for abusing her powers. Saying no to the “bridge to nowhere” hardly marks her as a political heavyweight. Saying no to obvious waste of money like that hardly seems daring, especially when it was saying no to a project recognized nationally as a complete waste of money. She had to say no. Compare her background of small-town politics and recently serving as governor of a relatively unpopulated state to a driven life to excel at all levels of schooling, to excel as a community leader and state legislator, then as a senator of the United States, which is what you find in Obama. So, does that answer the question for you? Can you honestly say that she is truly qualified to step in should something happen to McCain — who turned 72 today? I can honestly say she isn't.

Rational, I'm a neo-marxist? Just yesterday I was called a socialist. I wish you folks would pick an insult and run with it. As far as it being a depressing day for me — not even close! I'm appalled that someone so not ready for this promotion has been selected as VP, but I think it has killed any chance whatsoever McCain might have had in winning. I just can't believe anyone, including McCain, would pick somebody so lacking in any real history in politics for such an important political position. I actually can't stop smiling at the whole thing, because he just handed the election to Obama. So please, try again with an insult, because none even came close to hitting the mark. Glock, as far as being a fly on the wall, you would be surprised to learn that women don't just vote for someone because of gender. Do men? Will men who would never have voted for Clinton now refuse to vote for McCain because of his vp choice? The fact that Palin goes against so many of the things “womyn's” groups and Clinton hold dear, then Palin will be viewed as any other conservative who is attempting to hold back the goal of equality for all. Pretty simple, really. People in “womyn's” classes will acknowledge the fact that Republicans have finally caught up to where Democrats were in 1984, but it isn't like Palin is a leader for “womyn,” although she may inspire some conservative women. Further, the whole Palin with a machine gun clip I keep seeing may play well with NRA men, who were likely voting for McCain already, but it is NOT going to go over well with the average soccer moms. That is going to hurt her far more than it helps, even if guns in Alaska seem far more reasonable and necessary than guns in other areas of the country. This is a very, very good day for Democrats and fans of Obama.

Let us now review what has been said. The left is saying she does not have enough experience to be VP, just one breath away from being president. Based on what is being said, the supporters of Obama are confirming that Obama does not have enough experience to be President. Just as he said back in 2004. It is interesting that out of one side of the mouth the supporters of Obama praise him for being the first African American to be nominated as the presidential hopeful and do not see McCain's pick as being just as historic. Is this not a good day for all of us? Personally, i believe that the polictical races are all about division and getting us people at each others throats. They have been so succesful at this the county is split down the middle. The race for the democratic office now has divided up their portion of the people within their own party by in race, sex, young, old but not by idealogy. Let us not forget right, left, liberal, conservative, middle of road left, middle of road right, religious, non-religious, rich, poor, middle class, imigrant, resident, city dweller, country bumpkin, blue collar, white collar, etc etc…OPen your eyes people. As long as we buy into this load of crap we are in trouble. Be not fooled that Obama will chagne this or that McCain will change this keeping the people divided, because both they and all in Washington have used division as their weapon of choice . We the people, the real government, need to change this but seeing the blogs, we are all duped into the rhetoric that we are all fed. AS we fight amoungst ourselves, we are easy pickens for being raped by the government while they seize more and more power. Listen to what they say and see all their hypocrisy…ie …. they say we (them, the government) need to do something about health care for it is broken and they say out the other side of their mouth, Look at the shambles that Walter Reed Hospital and the healthcar it is in (run by the government. ) Hmmmmm…Who runs Walter Reed and who is it that wants now to fix the health care system in America? Why is the military going to independent health care providers and getting out of the health care business? Do you people ever get your head out of yoru (*^(* long enough to realize that they are all liars hell bent on gaining power, shoot for eternal fame in their legacy, and are bought and sold to acheive their own ends at the expense of us all. .

The polticians can do as they would like just as long as the people fight against each other and point towards the others as evil, stupid, etc. (Just read the blogs.) Not until the people stop fighting and buying into the division and stay divided the government powers will gain more power, take away our rights, take more of our money and ruin this country. What about the basics of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Are they truly found in what the either candidate is offering us? How about giving the power back to the people or better yet, us taking that power back through our votes. But now we will not only as individual parties divide this country, but we will be divided as a nation once again by the line that has been drawn by the candidates and their hurry to get those “coveted” votes, causing harm all along the way. This is the real shame. What would be historic is that two people who disagree on many issues and one from each party run on the same ticket, and offer to unite their efforts to serve the people of this great nation that is on the brink of ruin, mind you not jsut from the current administation but in a long line of administrations. But who is really to blame is we the people who do nothing but fight amoungst ourselves instead of holding all in Federal, State and local governments accountable

That alone should disqualify her & at this point we really need to be having a serious discussion of McCain's decision making process. He claims that he will make such a tremendous leader & that he, alone in the race, is uniquely qualified to handle our foreign policy. But what does this Palin decision reveal about his decision making abilities? That he will make a careful deliberation and act in our long term strategic intrerests, or will make a rash, decision based on short term gain. Frankly, the whole Palin selection smells of McCain making a gamble based on his gut instincts. Is that what we need from the next President? Secondly, this potential VP is currently under investigation for misuse of her authority to get back at an ex-spouse of a family member. Is she to be trusted with george bush's spying powers?

Palin knew she would be criticized, but took the right road and fired someone not carrying out his job responsibilities. She supplied all the internal memos, etc. without being asked. Of course, the investigation is being carried out by the ticked off Democrats, so who knows how fair the decision will be. Based on my research, I would have fired him as well for poor performance.

Why this move on McCain's part is brilliant, even though I personally dislike McCain, is that by picking an accomplished woman for veep, he has now committed the Democrat party to three more months of their rabid misogyny on display. Why this is also brilliant is because Palin appeals to the white conservative male vote and suburban soccer mom vote. Palin is every real man's fantasy: she's smart, logical, hunts, fishes, is a complete babe, owns a float plane (which is close enough to a bass boat for southern men), NRA life member, favorite dish is moose stew, a self-proclaimed “hockey mom,” nicknamed “barracuda” from playing basketball and doesn't spend money. She fills the bill for every bumper sticker, every shirt, every man show which has discussed finding the perfect woman. She also appeals to the millions of suburban SUV driving soccer moms, who are not militant femi-nazi's, but, want to see an accomplished woman who is honest and will not pander to special interests get an opportunity to serve in high levels of government. The women Hillary vote, who Obama kicked to the curb like a college frat boy does when the weekend's over, are going to flock to this ticket in droves. All you people on here that are attacking Palin for not attending Harvard, having a down syndrome baby, sounding like a commoner, being under investigation (which is a hopeful stretch at best), etc. are going to have a severe decade episodic case of depression because this pistol-packin hockey mom is here to stay in national politics for a loooong time. It is a remarkably dangerous and politically strategic move that proves McCain puts party before country. He selected her having met her just ONCE in his life. Anyone who feels that Obama's lifetime commitment to public causes, time as Illinois state legislator and as a United States Senator for the past four years isn't prepared should be appalled at the lack of this woman's experience. (mayor of a town of 6,500 for six years; gov over a state with the population of Austin, Texas for less than two.) I do believe the strategy will backfire. Palin is currently under investigation for abuse of power — a sure sign of politics as usual. She will too soon be identified by the negative things that come out about her. He quite because “he worried that some of the people he called couldn't really afford the subscription”Now… can everyone lay off the allegation that Obama has no private sector experience, has never made a major business decision, etc. There's the proof in black and white for you.

I've been there and done that and know that the decision to let someone go is not an easy one. But, sometimes tough decisions need to be made. It sounds like Sarah Palin is capable of making tough decisions when she needs to. She certainly knew that there would be fall-out from firing old cronies (even Republicans) who had not lived up to expectations for years, but she did what she had to do. If you read the reasons why Palin fired the commissioner, you will understand her actions better… and, the reasons had nothing to do with an ex-brother-in-law who tasered his own son. A managment person who allows old, ineffective cronies to continue employment is always popular, but popularity is not what an effective manager seeks.

He's not an elitist, what he is is smarter, harder working and more articulate than most Americans. He rose on his merits, as a true leader should.

Wow, Beatrice comparing the Dem Presidential candidate vs. the Republican VP candidate, and guess what, there's not that much difference, except that the VP candidate has executive experience. She's actually run something (mighty well, too, I might add), while the Democrat Presidential candidate has never managed anything.David Broder wrote in a Washington Post piece: “One of the wisest men I ever knew in Washington was the late James H. Rowe Jr. He came out of Montana, went to Harvard Law School and was recruited by Felix Frankfurter for a job on FDR's White House staff. In later years, he became a counselor to Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey and other Democrats of that generation.”The article continues;”One day he gave me a riddle. “Broder, if when I go to my reward, St. Peter were to say to me, 'James, you have lived a good life, and your reward is that I'm going to give you one amendment to the Constitution of the United States,' do you know what my amendment would be?”“I have no idea.”“It would be very simple,” he said. “No senator of the United States shall be eligible for the office of president.”This was a surprise, coming from a man who had been a great friend of Johnson, Humphrey and others who had sought or served in the White House.”The reason,” Rowe said, “is that senators don't know how to run anything. Their staffs have to tell them what to do. They walk around with little slips of paper in their pocket saying, 'Call so-and-so,' or, 'Remember to talk to so-and-so.' “So, being Senator for a few hundred days doesn't seem like a great qualification to be President, as James J. Rowe so aptly pointed out.Read the article here: http://www.newsobserver.com/opinion/c…

“The only drawback to Palin is the creationism thing, but nobody is perfect,”It is not a matter of being “perfect.” As VP & God forbid, President, she would have an impact on all sorts of scientific issues, from stem cell research, to global warming, to environmental issues. I'd prefer someone who approached such things from a perspective of understanding and valuing the scientific method. You would think that those of us here is Kansas would understand what absolute loons these creationists are and how extremely divisive and intrusive their agenda really is. In my mind she's unfit for office on this basis alone. That McCain would chose her makes him all the more questionable too,

Beatrice…sorry, I was talking about the private sector experience everyone is discussing. Maybe, you can fill us in on the private sector experience Obama has had since he graduated from Harvard. I must have missed it. Well… maybe brokering a real estate deal for his Chicago mansion with a shady character would count. Just jump in Beatrice….

Poco, after receiving his political science then law degrees, Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago. Perhaps you have a thing against teachers. After receiving her degree in Communications, Palin worked as a television sportscaster — as part of the liberal media, no doubt.

Beatrice… so, you think I have a thing against University “teachers”…. how very funny. I've taught at a graduate level for years, plus held a full-time management position. So, I have a “great thing” for teachers. Shall we move on????

Aww yes, I'm sure the same wingers defending Palin now were equally vocal in their defense of Ferraro when she was picked by Mondale for VP?”In my view, he guessed wrong in deciding to take a congresswoman that almost nobody had ever heard of and try to put her in line for the presidency … I don't know who among the Democrats might have been a better choice, but it was obvious Mondale picked Geraldine Ferraro simply because he believed there was a 'gender gap' where I was concerned and she was a woman.”-Ronald ReaganSarah Palin is probably what the Republicans are looking for to be the future of their party, but was she the best choice, in McCain's view, for the VP slot? Hmmm….Well, enjoy the campaign this fall, wingnuts. And enjoy swallowing your ignorant pride every time you have to defend the decisions of John McCain, the best candidate you have to offer.

poco, thanks for the background info on Obama's work experience. Those wanting a more **accurate** account of things can read here:http://letustalk.wordpress.com/2008/07/20/obama-summer-jobs-used-to-work-at-baskin-robbins/My first job, while in high school, was as a movie theater usher. I was hired the first June after I turned 16—and held that job for three years, until I made the move to waiting tables for a major chain restaurant. I waited tables at two other restaurants, as well, before I finally graduated from college and started my “real career.”It's been more than 20 years since I've worked in a restaurant—but I have no doubt I could go right back to it, if things got dire, if I needed extra money for some crisis that cropped up. Me? I'd rather wait tables than go on welfare. Funny, that **you** see that as a “weakness”…So I can relate to Obama's work experience. Rather than ask for a lot of handouts, or go on welfare, we have a man who was willing to take most any job, and make the most of it. That varied resume, from my viewpoint, also shows that Obama didn't have trouble finding a job when he needed one. It's the work history of someone who was punctual, committed, customer-oriented, and did his best at whatever he tried. In short, somebody who never quit. Now… what would be so bad about having that kind of person in the White House? Thanks again, “Poco Loco”… ;)Agnostickagnostick@excite.comhttp://www.uscentrist.orghttp://www.americanplan.org

poco, I'm sure I've hired and fired as many , if not more people than you. Rule number 1, do not make it personal. Since it's seems since the Republican controlled legislature is investigating this, there's at least an appearance of bias. alm77, maybe you're right, knowing McCains history, tapping the choice might be the reason for the choice.
