50-year-old Lawrence man pleads guilty to possessing child pornography

A 50-year-old Lawrence man faces 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of possessing child pornography, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.

The man, Richard McNett, admitted that investigators found more than 13,000 images of child pornography in his possession, said Jim Cross, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren.

“The investigation began after McNett’s wife gave (investigators) floppy disks from his computer,” Cross said. “She told investigators she was concerned because he was locking himself in a room with a computer and refusing to allow anyone in.”

McNett is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 1. In addition to prison time, he also faces a fine of up to $250,000, Cross said.

The Lawrence Police Department assisted with the case.
