A 50-year-old Lawrence man faces 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of possessing child pornography, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Tuesday.

The man, Richard McNett, admitted that investigators found more than 13,000 images of child pornography in his possession, said Jim Cross, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren.

"The investigation began after McNett's wife gave (investigators) floppy disks from his computer," Cross said. "She told investigators she was concerned because he was locking himself in a room with a computer and refusing to allow anyone in."

McNett is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 1. In addition to prison time, he also faces a fine of up to $250,000, Cross said.

The Lawrence Police Department assisted with the case.

You have got to be kidding me. 10 years? Try adding a few extra zeros onto that. The justice system is a sham.

Wow, some guy gets busted with a bag of pot and goes to jail for life and some sicko perv gets 10 years? Don't know which is worse, the justice system or the perv. Hope he enjoys the time he spends in jail, most likely in solitary considering what will happen to him if he's out with "normal" inmates. Maybe if we're lucky they will "take care of the problem" for us.

How are we suppose to stop child pornography if the sentences are not tougher. Anyone know when he would be eligible for parole?

  5. Informed (anonymous) says…

He needs to be put in general population. Problem solved.

Wonder if this is the same Richard McNett that was the city superintendent for Eudora. If it is, he had two daughters, so I could see why she would definitely turn him in. Unfortunately some women would not, I'm glad she had the strength to do it.

been_there have you ever spent any time in prison?anyone willing to risk ten years in prison wouldn't likely be much more deterred by 15... or 25:I'm not saying that he doesn't deserve more: I don't know what he deserves: but the risk of prison time as a deterrent didn't work for on guy:

  8. stuckinthemiddle (anonymous) says…

meant to say: didn't work on this guy...

"anyone willing to risk ten years in prison wouldn't likely be much more deterred by 15: or 25:"True. It's clear that this guy (just like others like him) was completely out of control. You could have threatened him with anything and he'd have kept on going.Hats off to the wife for being strong.

  12. chromehearts (anonymous) says…

He is not the old superintendent for eudora. He is a lawrence man. He only has 1 kid, and she is grown up.

You might want to look up statistics of prisoners in jail over pot, what you find may suprise you.

We need to get more shrill and crazy about this issue!!! I say we execute him and put his head on a pike in front of a school or something!!!

  15. daman (anonymous) says…

nice examples of people going to prison for a bag of pot. How about something somewhat objective instead of some pro pot propaganda garbage.

  16. bombshell (anonymous) says…

been_there & chromesheart-man, if it isn't the same guy as the old superintendent in Eudora... it sure sucks they have the same name. that'll take some time to clear his own name... Eudora and Lawrence aren't that far off.

  17. been_there (anonymous) says…

Not to mention all the questions his wife and two daughters will get.

  18. Ceallach (anonymous) says…

Does Marion want to 'out' the family and/or victims on this one?

"I say we execute him and put his head on a pike in front of a school or something!!!"Or, we could just force him to carry his gun in his waistband.

NONE of the links you gave do not match your statement of one bag of pot put someone in jail for life. The first link mentions his past history of a major felony crime BEFORE he was caught with marijuana. The second link mentions he was caught with weapons, which changes the whole situation. In reference to the third link -- an ounce of pot putting someone in jail for 26 years seems fishy and I bet there is much more to this story.Do not make statements about how one bag of pot puts someone in jail for life when it is not true, there is always more to the story.

Bea: "Or, we could just force him to carry his gun in his waistband."... double-barreled, sawed-off.

Please don't out the wife/daughter/victims. They are not to blame, and are very much to credit. The wife worked tirelessly with the police for a long time to get to this point. It has been ridiculously difficult for her and the rest of the family. I am so glad that she stuck with it and the police stuck with it to see that this creepy man finally got busted. Let's pray for healing for everyone instead.

  25. shirinisb (anonymous) says…

If someone posted his wife's name in this that would be awful, as she is obviously a good enough person to realize the issue and stop it. Had she not, and gone on as if nothing was happening like many women do, then she should also be arrested
