Physician, professor to receive awards

A longtime physician who graduated from Kansas University with undergraduate and medical degrees before working off and on for years as a doctor in Africa is one of two recipients of this year’s university Distinguished Service Citation.

Roger L. Youmans, who retired as a physician in 1999, and Eric Sundquist, an English professor at the University of California-Los Angeles, will receive their awards at the All University Supper on May 16, which is during commencement weekend.

Sundquist received his undergraduate degree from KU in 1974 and then received a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University. He has written eight books on American literature and culture. He has been an advocate for multiculturalism for much of his life.
