Lawrence police officer to receive Silver Award

A Lawrence police officer is among 56 Kansas law enforcement officers being honored for exceptional performance in 2007 and 2008.

Officer James Welsh, a six-year veteran, will receive the Silver Award for extraordinary action which directly contributed to the significant prolonging or saving of a life.

On May 4, 2007, Welsh was off duty in Leavenworth County when he helped a motorcycle accident victim whose arm was partially severed. He called emergency medical services and then acted to stop the bleeding. Welsh’s actions saved the victim’s life.

The state awards committee received 170 nominations to consider. Welsh will be recognized May 23 at the Joint Kansas Law Enforcement Conference banquet in Wichita.
