Man to stand trial in rape case
A judge on Thursday ordered a man to stand trial on charges of raping a Kansas University student after breaking into a room at a women’s residence hall.
The 19-year-old victim took the stand Thursday during a preliminary hearing in Douglas County District Court. She testified that she awoke in a friend’s room at GSP Hall during the early-morning hours of March 9 to find her clothing had been removed and the defendant was on top of her.
The victim, who was intoxicated, said she does not remember what happened.
An attorney for the 19-year-old suspect asked the judge to dismiss the charges, saying there is no evidence her client raped the woman.
Prosecutors are still waiting for test results on forensic evidence submitted to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation lab.
Judge Paula Martin, who ordered the man to stand trial June 30 on rape and aggravated burglary charges, reduced the defendant’s bond from $100,000 to $60,000 and ordered him not to return to GSP.
