KU takes first in writing contest
For the second consecutive year, Kansas University took first place in the national Hearst Intercollegiate Writing competition, often called the college Pulitzers.
The Hearst Foundation Wednesday announced the winners of the spot news competition, including Journal-World reporter Jonathan Kealing in eighth place nationally. Kealing wrote the story “From ‘The Hill’ to Maple Hill” as a student at KU working part-time at the Journal-World.
KU student Nathan Gill took 10th place in spot news for a story in the Miami County Republic about last summer’s flooding.
The Hearst competition is made of six monthly competitions in categories including profile, in-depth and sports writing. Other high-placing KU students include Travis Robinett, third for editorial writing, and Thor Nystrom, third for sports writing.
KU’s School of Journalism will receive $10,000 for the first-place finish.
