KU Filmworks festival seeks short entries
The theme is “dreams” and the required object is “glass” for the third annual KU Filmworks Film Festival. The short film competition (entries must not eclipse 10 minutes) encourages students to make pictures beyond the production opportunities afforded by the university. “A lot of times, KU film students don’t even get to take a production class until their second or third year,” says Alex Backus, one of the festival organizers along with Jon Tenholder and Kai Winikaa. “KU Filmworks is a way for students to learn about production, lighting, editing and all that, outside of a class. … We really just want people to go out and make films and learn from that process.” Backus says competitors should feel free to interpret the use of dreams and glass in as many ways possible. He also says the festival strongly discourages use of copyrighted music unless one has rights to the material. Entries must be turned in at Oldfather Studios before 5 p.m. today. The free showing takes places at 6 p.m. Sunday at The Granada, 1020 Mass.
