Rush story contained some inaccuracies

April 10, 2008

A story in the April 5 Lawrence Journal-World regarding court appearances for Kansas University basketball player Brandon Rush was not entirely accurate.

At the time, it was reported that Rush was facing contempt charges for failing to pay child support.

While Rush was scheduled to appear in court, a family court commissioner had dismissed the case on April 2.

As was mentioned in the story, however, a judge had the file in his possession and the court's online records could not be updated until the judge had released the file. Additionally, because the office was locked, the court spokeswoman said she was unable to verify the information that had been posted online and on which the story was based.

It was also mentioned that Rush had an upcoming court appearance in Lawrence municipal court for failing to pay court fines. Rush, however, paid his municipal court fines March 18 and has no legal obligations to the city of Lawrence.

I believe most newspapers report these as "corrections".

Way to go "hometown" paper. Not only was the timing of the original article classless, it is now apparent you have a bunch of amateurs running the place. Did the author have an agenda; was the editor asleep? You sure don't mind riding the coattails of KU athletics when things are good (care for a commemorative national championship newspaper set, anyone?), but in this case, you didn't miss the chance to take a cheap shot. For the sake of argument, how many other ku students have child support cases pending? How many other KU students have failed to pay court fines? Any clue? Is the information even newsworthy? Apparently it is if your last name is Rush.I am not stating that deadbeat fathers should be given quarter or that KU basketball stars deserve special treatment in the courts. But they do deserve basic fact-checking. Get it together LJ World.

It's the only paper in town and there are good sports writers. Still this was classless and unnecessary.

We wouldn't have to complain if the LJWorld would display any journalistic integrity...Does the paper not employ any editors? I mean damn, it is one horrible mistake after the other and all of them would of been easily prevented with an editor ensuring proper fact checking procedures, or word choice, etc.

I have to agree.... I refuse to pay for the paper but I will read it online for free! The ljworld totally sucks! If they had some competition in this town you could bet things would be different!

For goodness sakes, don't let accurate facts stand in the way of getting a juicy story out to press... and the "Dan Rather Award" goes to...

Navyjayhawk: Well spoken. Andini: I'm here for the commentary, not the news. I get my news from other sources.
