Man charged in connection with post-game altercation

A 21-year-old Lawrence man faces an aggravated battery charge after police found a man injured Saturday night near 10th and Missouri streets following Kansas University’s Final Four victory.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said his office has filed the charge against Michael Ross Boeken, who is expected to appear in court this afternoon.

Lawrence police gave this account: About 10:20 p.m. Saturday, officers found a man lying in the street. He was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. The man told police he and two women were walking toward downtown after KU’s victory when another man bumped him from behind and then punched him in the face.

The man said several other people struck him as he fell to the ground. When the two women pushed the assailants off, the men began to push the women. The victim then said he tried to stand in front of the women when the assailants began to strike him again.

Police eventually identified and arrested one suspect, Boeken.

Branson said he believed the victim, whose name was not released, has been released from LMH based on the severity of his injuries. No other arrests have been made, Branson said.
