Kansas City, Kan. ? A Las Vegas company led by one of the world’s wealthiest people is among the applicants vying to operate a casino in Wyandotte County.

The Las Vegas Sands Corp. wants to build a $500 million casino and hotel resort project at Interstate 435 and Leavenworth Road. The company’s chief executive officer, Sheldon G. Adelson, is listed at No. 3 on the annual Forbes magazine list of the 400 Wealthiest Americans. Earlier this year, he was slotted as No. 6 richest person in the world.

The 74-year-old’s personal fortune is estimated at $20.3 billion.

Pinnacle Entertainment Inc., also of Las Vegas, also submitted a proposal for a Wyandotte County casino. Pinnacle is developing two St. Louis area casino resorts with a combined value of $870 million.

Monday was the deadline for casino proposals to be filed with the Wyandotte County government.

Kansas Speedway and the Cordish Co. of Baltimore submitted a joint casino proposal. Another application came from a limited liability corporation formed by the Kickapoo and Sac and Fox tribes, which have operated reservation casinos in Kansas since the late 1990s.

Other applicants include RED Development of Kansas City, Mo.; Olympia Gaming of Las Vegas; and the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority of Connecticut.
