Kerry Meier can’t remember the last time he was on the football field with the offense and not lined up at quarterback.

“I really can’t pinpoint a certain time, ever,” Meier said. “Maybe when I was playing with my brothers.”

Which made Saturday’s first-half action even more of a surprise.

In Kansas University’s 55-3 victory over Florida International, the Jayhawks’ backup quarterback lined up as a slot receiver and played extensively in two series.

Meier caught a pass for 15 yards on his first play. He then moved into the backfield in the second play and ran the ball six yards on an option right. He was a decoy in other plays.

Kansas State, KU’s next opponent on Oct. 6, certainly will see that on film when it begins preparing for Kansas in a week. Another thing for the Wildcats to worry about probably was on the Jayhawks’ mind when they introduced the new wrinkle in a game they really didn’t need to introduce it in.

“We had it ready last week, but we didn’t feel we had the right time to use it,” starting quarterback Todd Reesing said. “The coaches wanted to get that out there and get Kerry the ball a few times and let him make some plays.

“I think that’s something we’re going to do in the future, and maybe even expand on it. : Obviously having two quarterbacks on the field, there’s that extra threat and extra passing options.”
