A two-game win streak has hardly propelled Dirk Wedd into the throes of ecstasy.

“We’ve improved every week,” said Wedd, now in his ninth season as Lawrence High’s football coach, “but not at the rate I wanted to.”

Wedd began the season, for instance, concerned about the offensive line, and he’s still looking for answers.

“We need to find five people who will come off the ball and strike you,” Wedd said. “I think we’ll find out a lot about our team during the next three weeks.”

Over that span, the Lions (2-1) will face three of the Sunflower League’s best teams – Olathe South, Olathe East and Shawnee Mission Northwest. The gauntlet will begin tonight against O-South.

Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at the Olathe District Activities Center.

Two spots on the offensive line are in a state of flux. Jay Baker, who opened the season at one guard spot, was injured midway through the opener against Olathe North, and Penny Khaithianthong has been filling in ever since.

Baker is expected to return tonight, but Wedd said the 6-foot, 215-pound sophomore would see just limited duty.

At tackle, Stephen Mason has started every game, but the 6-4, 280-pound junior and one of the few Lions who boasts both height and bulk is being pushed by 5-11, 250-pound senior Derek Huff.

On paper, offense wouldn’t seem to be a problem following a 28-0 blanking of Olathe Northwest and a 31-21 decision over SM North yet, as Wedd stressed, “The competition will get a lot steeper.”

Junior running back Clifton Sims has been particularly impressive the last two weeks with 146 rushing yards against O-Northwest and 117 against SM North.

At the same time, junior quarterback Clint Pinnick has been effective as both a passer and a runner. The 5-9, 175-pound Pinnick has completed better than 50 percent of his passes (24 of 46) for 418 yards and two touchdowns. He has also rushed for 108 yards and three scores.

Meanwhile, Travis Sanders and Jared Vinoverski have been reliable receivers. Sanders has 10 receptions for 137 yards; Vinoverski eight catches for 202 yards. Also, fullback Tyler Hunt has rushed for 168 yards and four TDs.

Olathe South (2-1) was the overwhelming choice of the league coaches to win the championship. However, SM West stunned the Falcons, 20-14, last Friday, and the Vikings may not have done Lawrence High any favors.

“I think they’ll be very, very upset,” Wedd said. “I was hoping Shawnee Mission West would win.”

Tonight’s game will be the Lions’ third on the road in the first month, but their next four will be at Haskell Stadium.
