Teachers vote to approve new contract

In the final stamp of approval needed, Lawrence teachers voted this week to ratify this year’s contract.

School board members had officially approved the negotiated agreement Monday. The new contract includes adding $1.2 million to the salary schedule, a 3.28 percent increase from last year.

Adela Solis, Lawrence Education Association president, said Saturday morning that enough teachers voted for ratification and that she had notified board members. She said it was precedent not to release the exact voting results.

Teachers started the year under last year’s pay scale, and the ratification will start the process for retroactive pay to be figured in to future paychecks.

Negotiators reached the agreement in August after they were more than $1 million apart on salary raises for several weeks.

Negotiators of next year’s contract will also take up issues such as elementary-teacher planning time and the district’s early-retirement system. The two sides agreed to continue studying those issues this year.
