American indian actress gives voice to unique band

To realize that Irene Bedard and Deni isn’t your typical band, look no further than the title track on its first album.

It’s called “Warrior of Love,” and it includes spoken-word sections, techno beats, rock guitar lines and American Indian chanting.

The duo, which plays at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lied Center, represents the blended backgrounds of a husband and wife – Bedard, who is best known as an American Indian actress, and Deni Wilson, whose roots are in rock music and off-Broadway productions.

The band formed around four years ago, when Wilson and Bedard had their son, Quinn. They decided that Wilson and Quinn would follow Bedard to her sets, and then the couple started a band.

“We just really wanted to do something together,” Bedard says.

Bedard, who is best known as the voice of the title character in Disney’s “Pocahontas” and for her role in “Smoke Signals,” says the group is both a way to pass on wisdom to their son and to express their political views.

The couple have a song called “Wolf Instinctive” about Leonard Peltier, the American Indian who was convicted of killing two FBI agents in 1977.

The words: “Dear Leonard Peltier / I want you to know / In Indian country there are a great many people that think of you / That think of you / Dear Leonard Peltier / There’s something you should know / In Indian country there are Indian people that pray for you / That pray for you.”

“This is something for us that is just a way to look at this world and represent who each one of us is,” Bedard says.
