City upholds agreement reached with Deciphera

The city’s still more than happy to follow through on a package of public incentives to keep Deciphera Pharmaceuticals in Lawrence.

Commissioners on Tuesday unanimously agreed to tweak a package of incentives that previously was approved in January. The incentives package is geared toward helping the start-up drug development company move into a new laboratory and office space at the East Hills Business Park.

The city agreed to participate in a group including the county, the Lawrence-Douglas County Bioscience Authority and Douglas County Development Inc. that will provide at least $1.5 million in grants to the pharmaceutical company over a 10-year period. Another $500,000 in grant money also will be available to the company if it employs 200 or more people in Lawrence within the next 10 years.

The Kansas Bioscience Authority also agrees to pay another $1.5 million to the company.

The amount of money the city is committing to the incentives package is the same as it agreed to in January, City Manager David Corliss said. The main difference in the proposal is that Deciphera now intends to buy the East Hills Building at 3813 Greenway Drive. Previously, Deciphera had planned on leasing the approximately 67,000-square-foot building.

Deciphera will pay $2.475 million for the building, which is currently owned by DCDI and was built as a speculation building designed to attract new businesses to town.
