Scoring Summary: KU-KSU

First Quarter

8:48: KSU – Jordy Nelson 68 pass from Josh Freeman (Brooks Rossman kick) – 7-0

-On a beautiful fade route, Josh Freeman put the ball just over Nelson’s shoulder where only his guy could grab it. Aqib Talib never had a chance to turn and look for it. Nelson never broke stride, and made many heads turn with his speed by outrunning Talib until about the 15-yard line, where Talib realized he had no shot at the stop.

Second Quarter

9:11: KU – Jake Sharp 20 run (Scott Webb kick) – 7-7

-After a 14-yard run to set up KU in the red zone, Jake Sharp showed a great combination of speed and balance, squirting through a pile of both purple and white jerseys at about the 10-yard line, and he easily rolled into the end zone for KU’s first touchdown in Manhattan in eight years.

3:52: KSU – Leon Patton 6 run (Brooks Rossman kick) – 14-7

-James Johnson and Leon Patton each pushed piles on consecutive runs. The second time, after seemingly being stalled out at the three, Patton churned his legs across the goal line, ending a time-consuming drive which was the ideal response for KSU to Kansas’ first lengthy possession of the game.

:11: KU – Aqib Talib 5 pass from Todd Reesing (Scott Webb kick) – 14-14

-KU had time for just a shot or two into the end zone before halftime, and it only took one attempt. Aqib Talib, who had a rough first half defensively, slipped from his spot in the slot to the front left pylon for a touchdown. That made it six straight games in which Talib has found the end zone, dating back to the Missouri game in 2006.

Third Quarter

6:59: KU – Dezmon Briscoe 28 pass from Todd Reesing (Scott Webb kick) – 21-14

-Dezmon Briscoe redeemed himself for dropping a deep pass a few snaps earlier by showing some nice open field speed after catching a quick slant from Todd Reesing for his fourth grab of the day.

:50: KSU – Brooks Rossman 32 field goal – 21-17

-KU needed a stop after giving possession back to KSU on a roughing the kicker call against Dakota Lewis. Aqib Talib and James McClinton each made huge defensive stops inside their own 20-yard line to hold a surging K-State offense to three points.

Fourth Quarter

7:32: KSU – Deon Murphy 5 pass from Leon Patton (Rossman kick) – 24-21

-KSU pulled out some trickery, as Leon Patton found a wide open Deon Murphy in the back of the end zone for the junior’s seventh grab of the day, giving him 53 yards. It was only a matter of time until K-State capitalized on oone of KU’s three huge second half miscues.

6:27: KU – Dexton Fields 30 pass from Todd Reesing (pass failed) – 27-24

-The possession was a big redemption party for Fields, who had two grabs for 63 yards. His touchdown play was a tough catch over the middle in which he shucked off a defender and rolled into the end zone with ease.

2:21: KU – Scott Webb 24 field goal – 30-24

-KU was left with a field goal try after a pass fell from the hands of Derek Fine in the back of the end zone on third down.
