Maybe the Lawrence High boys soccer team should travel more often.

A promising three-game road trip in which the Lions earned a victory and a tie ended with a thud at home Wednesday night – a 6-0 loss to Shawnee Mission Northwest.

“I thought it was the best team we played all year,” LHS head coach Bill Kelly said. “When you play a good team and you don’t play particularly smart, then they make you pay, and we paid dearly today.”

The Cougars netted as many goals in the first 24 minutes (four) as LHS allowed in its three previous games combined. The barrage was enough to knock Lions goalkeeper Sean Simmons out. Literally.

SM Northwest forward Tyler Cindrich collided with Simmons in the 24th minute, collected the loose ball and tapped it into the net for his third goal of four on the night.

After the play, Simmons lay motionless in front of the goal for several seconds before being helped off the field.

“I just ran up to him and started grabbing him, and there was nothing,” LHS junior Bobby Davis said. “I mean, he wasn’t moving, he wasn’t talking. It was just scary.”

Kelly said there was a noticeable difference in his team’s demeanor once its goalkeeper left the game.

“When Sean got hurt, that kind of put the steam out of us a little bit, and it was hard to pick it up after that,” Kelly said.

LHS (2-8-1) will be without Simmons when it plays host to Shawnee Mission North at 7 p.m. tonight at YSI.
