KU basketball notebook: Chenowith joins Hornets

Louisiana prep Henry picks Ole Miss

Julian Wright isn’t the only former Kansas University basketball player who will be reporting to New Orleans Hornets training camp.

Ex-Jayhawk center Eric Chenowith signed a free-agent contract with the Hornets on Monday, the contract contingent on his making the team.

New Orleans also signed Ryan Bowen, Trey Johnson and Anthony Richardson, bringing their camp roster to 17.

The 7-foot-1 Chenowith, 28, was cut early in training camp last October by the Chicago Bulls. He was a second-round draft pick of the New York Knicks in 2001.

Wright, who was tapped at No. 13 overall in the 2007 NBA Draft, played two seasons at KU before electing to turn pro.

KU has other players in NBA camps: Keith Langford, Jacque Vaughn, San Antonio; Nick Collison, Seattle; Kirk Hinrich, Chicago; Drew Gooden, Cleveland; Paul Pierce, Scot Pollard, Boston; Raef LaFrentz, Portland; and Wayne Simien, Miami.

¢ Henry picks Ole Miss: Terrance Henry, a 6-9 forward from Carroll High in Monroe, La., orally committed to the University of Mississippi on Monday night.

Henry visited Mississippi on Sept. 21 and Arkansas last weekend. He was to visit LSU next weekend, KU for Late Night in the Phog on Oct. 12 and Miami of Florida on Oct. 19.

Henry’s high school coach, Chris Oney, played his college basketball at Ole Miss. It is believed KU’s interest in Henry had waned of late.

¢ Monroe update: The country’s No. 1 prospect, Greg Monroe of Harvey, La., on Sunday told the New Orleans Times Picayune he “still had a little bit of interest in Kansas.”

That came in the wake of last week’s announcement that KU did not make Monroe’s final list of five.

However, Monday night, Monroe’s high school coach told Rivals.com that Monroe definitely was not considering KU.

A lot figures to change in Monroe’s recruitment as the player has indicated he may not sign until April.

¢ Morris twins update: Marcus and Markieff Morris, 6-8 twins from Philadelphia, have eliminated West Virginia from their list of schools according to Adam Zagoria of the Herald-News in West Paterson, N.J.

The two, who recently decommitted from Memphis reportedly have co-leaders in KU and Villanova.

¢ Taylor likes KU, Virginia Tech: Tyshawn Taylor, a 6-3 guard from St. Anthony High in Jersey City, N.J., told Rivals.com that KU and Virginia Tech are his co-leaders.

Taylor, who visited Virginia Tech last weekend, has visits scheduled to Marquette (Oct. 5), Georgia Tech (Oct. 12) and Virginia (Oct. 19). He has yet to set up his visit to KU.

“It’s possible that I could visit Kansas during their Midnight Madness,” he told Rivals.com. “I’m supposed to visit Georgia Tech that weekend, but I could possibly change the visit and go see Kansas.”

¢ Little meeting coaches: Mario Little, a 6-6 sophomore from Chipola (Fla.) CC, is expected to meet with coaches from KU, K-State and Illinois this week as he contemplates his three finalists.

“The coaching staff at each school has done a great job recruiting Mario,” Chipola coach Greg Heiar told Rivals. “Saying no to two of the schools is going to be very difficult.”
