Rush only a ‘little stiff’ after UA

KU's Reed, nursing sprained ankle, likely won't play tonight; FAU leader left at home

Kansas University junior Brandon Rush, who played 36 productive minutes in a 76-72 overtime victory over Arizona on Sunday night, reports that he felt fine physically the day after his longest outing of the season.

“I felt good, no soreness. It (surgically repaired right knee) was a little stiff, but I expected that. Other than that, no swelling, no nothing.”

Rush said he remains about “85-90 percent” entering today’s 7 p.m. home battle against Florida Atlantic.

KU coach Bill Self said Rush will continue coming off the bench as his comeback continues.

“I’m not 100 percent yet, so it’s better for me to come off the bench,” Rush said. “Everybody’s playing so well. Rod (Stewart) is playing so well; Russell (Robinson) and Mario (Chalmers) are playing so well right now.”

¢ Reed likely to sit: KU freshman guard Tyrel Reed, who sprained his right ankle against Arizona on Sunday, is not expected to play tonight.

“I don’t think he’ll be able to go. He may be able to. He will not be able to practice today. I can’t imagine him being able to go tomorrow,” Self said Tuesday.

“It’s feeling better. It’s kind of a slow process right now,” Reed said.

Of getting fallen on by teammate Darnell Jackson on Sunday, Reed noted: “It was pretty painful. I tried to see if I could go at halftime. I didn’t think it was best for the team if I was playing.”

¢ Leading scorer out: Florida Atlantic coach Rex Walters didn’t bring the Owls’ leading scorer with him on this week’s trip to UMKC and KU. Junior Paul Graham is on indefinite suspension.

“That tells you something right there (about Walters as a coach). They go on a long road trip, they’ve not played at home yet (with 1-5 record) and leave the leading scorer at home. He’s trying to set the right foundation over time and not just win any one game,” KU coach Self said, praising Walters.

¢ Memories: Walters was asked his favorite and least favorite memories of being a Jayhawk:

“My gosh, there were so many good memories. The worst memory was UTEP without a doubt,” he said of KU’s 66-60 loss in a second-round 1992 NCAA Tournament game that ended a 27-5 season. “My favorite memory was beating Indiana to go to the Final Four (83-77 in 1993). We lost to North Carolina (in national semifinals), but I thought Carolina was really good. UTEP … I thought we had a team that was the best in the nation. On any given night, if you don’t play particularly well, you get sent home. That’s what happened.”

¢ Board work: Self hopes for better rebounding tonight. KU was outboarded 38-29 by Arizona.

“We are not being very physical, not playing strong,” Self said. “Our base is bad. We’ve got to a better job. We’re working hard every day.”
