A rural Douglas County man charged with arson stemming from a lengthy standoff earlier this month will have a preliminary court hearing next month.

An attorney for Darrel Maley, 57, said Tuesday that Maley recently under went a mental examination. The results of the examination aren’t yet known, but Maley’s attorney, Hatem Chahine, asked that his client be transferred to a mental facility in Kansas City, Mo., for inpatient treatment.

Douglas County District Judge Stephen Six denied that request and said it could be discussed later after the evaluation results were known. He scheduled Maley’s preliminary hearing for Dec. 18.

Maley was arrested following a standoff on Nov. 9 at a residence near Pleasant Grove. He allegedly set fire to the house after keeping sheriff’s officers at bay with a shotgun for 10 hours. He is being held in jail in lieu of $150,000 bond.
