Airstrip request on county agenda

A permit request from a rural Douglas County man that would allow him to continue to fly from a private airstrip goes before county commissioners tonight.

Since 1999 James Butell has used the strip on his property at 593 E. 1250 Road. But it wasn’t until the past year that the county realized he didn’t have a permit.

Butell said during a meeting with commissioners earlier this year that he didn’t know he needed a permit. Commissioners at that time delayed deciding whether to grant the permit pending further review.

The county planning staff and the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission have recommended granting the permit. The permit would expire after 10 years and will be reviewed by the county after five years.

Commissioners also will decide whether to approve a number of amendments to subdivision and rural development regulations.

The meeting begins at 6:35 p.m. at the courthouse, 1100 Mass.
