Mangino ‘having a good time’

Kansas University football coach Mark Mangino would rather finish his painting before taking a step back and admiring it.

For now, the Jayhawks’ sixth-year leader is keeping his eye on each Saturday ahead of him, continuing with today’s 7 p.m. game at Oklahoma State.

That means not expressing pride in the first nine games, though he does admit being 9-0 is a little bit of fun right now.

“I’m not miserable,” Mangino said with a grin. “I’m having a good time. But I’m not running up and down the hallways or anything like that. I’m enjoying it as I can, as I go.”

The attitude has made its way down to the players. Many were asked this week about KU’s postseason possibilities, and some dismissed it as useless because it’s not a guarantee yet.

“If we mess up this week and don’t do well and don’t take care of business,” tight end Derek Fine, “all that’s gone.”

But it doesn’t mean that each day at the office is like them all. At least not in spirit.

“I’ll tell you this: It’s a lot more fun to come to work when we’re winning. In that respect, it is enjoyable,” Mangino said. “But to reflect on it or to say ‘Look what we’ve done?’ Nah. We’ll look back after our work is done here.”

¢TV perks: Today’s game will be KU’s sixth in a row on television, and the ABC broadcast will be seen by 63 percent of the country.

That makes it easier for relatives of some players, including Kansas linebacker James Holt.

“I’ve got a few uncles around. It’ll be really exciting for them to get to see me play,” Holt said. “It’s hard for them to go because a lot of them are in the military and they can’t really up and leave.

“I’m just going to play my game, and then talk to them afterward when they give me a call and are like ‘Well you look just like your daddy.'”

¢OU worried?: Speaking of Holt, the Altus, Okla., native has several friends at Oklahoma State who will attend today’s game. But that’s not the fan base that has been bothering him with text messages lately as Kansas keeps on winning.

“I actually get a lot more from my OU friends. Asking us to calm down,” Holt said of the Big 12 South leaders. “I guess they’re getting a little nervous.”

¢Coming along: The structure of the $31 million Anderson Family Football Complex is starting to take shape.

The two-story complex, which is being built on the southwest side of Memorial Stadium, will be the headquarters of the KU football team beginning next year. On the southeast side will be two practice fields, which already are leveled off.

Construction of the football building is targeting a July 2008 completion.

¢This, that: Today is Oklahoma State’s last home game of the year, and 21 seniors will be honored. : KU and OSU are the only two teams in the Big 12 averaging 200 yards rushing and receiving this season. : Kansas has 13 Oklahomans on its roster, but Oklahoma State has just two Kansans – quarterback Zac Dickey (Pittsburg) and receiver Seth Newton (Girard). : The all-time series between Kansas and Oklahoma State is tied at 28-28-3. The Cowboys have won the last five meetings.
