LHS soccer team closes with win
Lions shut out Topeka High in regular-season finale
Topeka ? The Lawrence High girls soccer team found the perfect bookend to its rough regular season Friday night, knocking off Topeka High, 3-0, at Hummer Sports Park for the Lions’ first victory since opening the 2007 campaign with three straight wins.
Sophomore Becky Davis opened the scoring for LHS (4-8-2) with 20 minutes elapsed in the first half, scoring off a cross from freshman Kaylee Tesdahl.
Another freshman, Olivia Dykes, made it 2-0 with 15 minutes remaining in the second half after a breakaway up the middle, and senior Abby Vestal closed out the scoring with a successful penalty kick after Tesdahl was taken down in the box with approximately four minutes remaining.
Sophomore Jordan Payne pitched the shutout in goal for the Lions.
“It feels really good,” said LHS coach Matt Anderson of his team breaking a 10-game winless streak just in time for next week’s Class 6A regionals. “What was nice about it was the fact that we did not ever go away from what they’ve been taught and what we’re trying to build as a program.
“When we’re on, the game can be brilliant. The problem is, we just haven’t been brilliant enough during the losing stretch.”
LHS will find out its regional seeding and first-round opponent during a seeding meeting today.
