Law enforcement report

Lawrence police officers arrested a 20-year-old Olathe man following a low-speed automobile pursuit that started when the man eluded two officers on bike patrol.

Sgt. Damon Thomas said the two bike patrol officers attempted to stop the man on a traffic charge around 10 p.m. in downtown Lawrence when the car took off westbound on 11th Street, running red lights on Kentucky and Tennessee streets.

The car was later spotted by an officer on 23rd and Massachusetts streets and the officer attempted to stop the driver, but the driver tried to elude officers through a series of U-turns on New Hampshire and Massachusetts streets.

Finally, police managed to stop the car at 23rd and Barker streets, whereupon the man got out of the car and ran on foot but was quickly stopped and arrested by police.

Sgt. Thomas said alcohol was suspected to be a contributing factor to the incident.

He added that speeds in the pursuit were in the 20 to 25 mph range.

The owner of the car was in the passenger seat of the car during the pursuit.

Injury accidents

A 56-year-old Lawrence woman is recovering at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center following a one-car accident in Topeka at 4:18 p.m. Friday.

Karen Rooman was driving eastbound on Southeast 45th Street when her Jeep Cherokee veered toward the side of the road and struck an elevated driveway, flipping the car on the side.

Shawnee County Sgt. Akim Reynolds said the car’s floorboard had been pushed upward in the collision, pinning her feet between the floorboard and dashboard.

Authorities extricated Rooman from the car and life-flighted her to Stormont-Vail with what Reynolds described as a compound fracture to her ankle and possible internal bleeding.

“I’m sure if she didn’t have her seat belt on, it would have been a lot worse,” Reynolds said.

Rooman was listed as a patient at the hospital Saturday night, but declined to have the hospital reveal her condition.
