Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger is urging Medicare beneficiaries and their families to be aware of a new Medicare phone scam.
Her office issued a "consumer alert" Thursday that details the concern:
A caller claims to be a Medicare representative from your area Medicare office. The caller reports that all Medicare beneficiaries will receive $200 or $150 per month to pay for prescription drugs, and the beneficiary will receive a new Medicare card showing proof of the new benefits.
The caller then asks to confirm the beneficiary's Medicare number and asks for the beneficiary's bank account number.
According to reports, the caller is said to have a foreign accent and has used the last name of "Jones" with a representative ID number of DJ1049. The caller may give out phone numbers with an 866 area code as numbers to call if a beneficiary does not want to enroll now and wishes to do so at a later date.
Praeger's take: "Medicare representatives will never ask for a bank account number over the phone. Consumers that receive suspicious phone calls or have any questions concerning their Medicare or other insurance products should contact the Kansas Insurance Department Consumer Assistance Hotline at (800) 432-2484 or the Senior Health Insurance Counseling Hotline at (800) 860-5260."
