Hospital affiliation deadline approaching

Saturday marks the deadline Kansas University Medical Center has set for finalizing details of its planned affiliations in coming years with two Kansas City-area hospitals: its longtime partner, KU Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., and its proposed new partner, St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

The deadline was contained in letters of intent KU signed with both hospitals. The goal was to have a plan finished by Saturday detailing how the school will share money, faculty and students with each hospital in coming years.

KU School of Medicine Dean Barbara Atkinson said the St. Luke’s board was going to meet today to discuss details of the agreement. In a KU Hospital board meeting earlier this week, KU Hospital CEO Irene Cumming said she wasn’t concerned about the Saturday deadline and predicted that details of its agreement with the medical school would be finished by late May.
