Students to hold peace vigils in April

A group of students from the Ecumenical Christian Ministries at Kansas University will organize a series of peace vigils in April.

The vigils will be from noon to 1 p.m. on Mondays, starting April 2, in Danforth Chapel on KU’s campus.

Timothy Stauffer, one of the organizers, said the vigils will allow Christians to reflect on war’s place within religious tradition and to commemorate the sacrifices of Americans and Iraqis during the Iraq war.

“The Christian community has been pretty ambivalent about taking a stance on the war,” Stauffer said. “We think it is time for the Christian community to recognize the traditions of nonviolence and reconciliation.”

Stauffer said everyone is welcome at the vigils.

“This is not a Christian event at all, but we want to stress that we are coming from a Christian perspective,” he said. “We do make a special plea to our fellow Christians to make a stance for peace.”

A guitarist will play during the events, and participants will be able to tie strings onto a nylon web to commemorate those who have been affected by the war.
