Lions finish 1-2 on long road trip

? The Lawrence High baseball team split a pair of games against two of Oklahoma’s best squads.

The Lions fell to Tulsa Kelley, 15-7, before toppling Stillwater, 6-5, with a late-game comeback. LHS scored all six of its runs in the last two innings, overcoming a 5-0 deficit.

“Dorian Green started and pitched his tail off and kept them in check,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said. “We could never really get anything going offensively.”

Joe Kornbrust picked up the win in relief.

In game one, the Lions were competitive before allowing 11 runs in the final two innings.

“The first game was crazy,” Stoll said. “(Daniel) Green and (Preston) Schielber pitched really well, as did Jordan (Gunnart). In the fifth inning we gave them five or six opportunities and made a really costly throwing error.

“We felt it was our game,” Stoll said, “then we kind of gave it away.”

Gunnart hit two home runs, while Aaron Rea contributed a double in game one.

The Lions are 1-2 after their season-opening road trip and will play host to Olathe South on Thursday at Ice Field.
