Lecompton bridge to close early Monday

The Kansas River bridge at Lecompton will close for repairs early Monday.

The repairs, which will include replacing the deck, are expected to keep the bridge closed until Aug. 10.

A.M. Cohron & Son Inc., with headquarters in Atlantic, Iowa, is the contractor. The cost of the project is $2.518 million, not including painting of the bridge superstructure, which will follow the repair work.

Douglas County commissioners last year made the controversial decision to close the bridge, pictured above, during the repairs. Perry and Lecompton residents, businesses and the school district opposed the decision and asked that one lane of the bridge be kept open during construction, even though repairs would take longer and cost more.

Commuters who regularly travel the bridge should not expect it to be open for rush hour Monday morning, said Keith Browning, county engineer.
