Union Pacific worker recovering in Shawnee

A Lawrence High School graduate who lost his right leg last week in a train accident now is recovering at home.

Wayne Transmeier, 56, who lives in Shawnee, was injured Feb. 27 in Muncie while working as a flagman for Union Pacific Railroad.

Transmeier’s legs somehow became entangled with a train, said his mother, Juanita Transmeier.

“He was hooking up a train,” she said. “He gave them the signal to go.”

The accident scratched his left leg, but his right leg was amputated.

Transmeier was released Tuesday from Kansas University Medical Center. He is now at home in Shawnee, his mother said.

“He is taking it in good spirit, I’ll say that for him,” she said.

Transmeier graduated from Lawrence High School in 1969 and went to work for the railroad soon after. He’s worked at the railroad for 38 years.
