Cancer fight

To the editor:

On June 8, the first annual countywide American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Douglas County was held at the Free State High School track. This is an event that allows participants from all walks of life – including patients, survivors, corporations, families, community volunteers and faith, spiritual and community organizations – to join together in the fight against cancer.

Approximately 1,000 people attended our “Carnival for a Cure” and enjoyed a beautiful summer evening and celebration of life. Four thousand luminaries were lit during a special and moving ceremony in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of those lost to the disease – what a sight to behold!

Our goal of $155,000 was surpassed with more than $172,000 raised and donations still coming in. Could we hope to reach $175,000?

We must thank our wonderful business and corporate sponsors who provide the foundation upon which Relay For Life is built and extend congratulations to our team captains and their teams (more than 900 participants). Without their dedication and commitment to raising funds for the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life would not happen in our community.

In addition, we recognize and are humbled by the exceptional generosity of the people of Douglas County. Our success would not be realized if it weren’t for you. We are so proud of the countywide community we represent! Thank you for making a difference in the fight against cancer.
