County approves extra day of fireworks sales

Now allowed July 1 through 4

Douglas County commissioners this morning approved changes to county zoning regulations that allow fireworks sales to take place one extra day this year.

Fireworks vendors will be able to sell their products from July 1 through July 4.

To do that, however, commissioners had to approve language that removed “operational characteristics” and “days of operations” for fireworks from the zoning regulations and make them directly applicable to decisions made by the commission.

Commissioners also approved giving the county zoning department director the authority to grant certain types of public fireworks display permits.

In other business commissioners approved a conditional use permit for a mini-storage facility called Lakeside Storage to be built along East 900 Road and the South Lawrence Trafficway. The permit was sought by Robert D. Voth, president of Windover Community of Lawrence, LLC, the property owner.
