Football complex showing progress

Construction crews wiping out parking spots to make room for practice fields

Work continues at the Anderson Family Football Complex, and it’s getting pretty noticeable now.

Crews were hard at work Saturday, concentrating on the area southeast of Memorial Stadium. A chunk of spaces around lots 91, 92 and 93 southeast of the stadium has been removed, presumably to make room for two practice fields that will be developed in that area.

In addition, digging is noticeable on the southeast, southwest, west and northwest sides of the stadium. KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway insisted in a press release one year ago that every parking spot taken out would be replaced nearby. That likely means the spaces removed southeast of the stadium will be replaced west or southwest of the stadium.

Parking lots 55 and 59 west of the stadium are closed while work is being done.

The rearranged parking is expected to be done soon. The original target dates called for the two practice fields southeast of the stadium to be done this fall, and the building southwest of the stadium to be completed in the summer of 2008.

The complex is expected to cost $31 million and was financed by donations, including large gifts from the families of Dana Anderson and Tom Kivisto.

¢ New guy: Kansas University has made a late addition to its 2007 recruiting class. Rivals.com reported Chea Peterman will enroll at Kansas and join the football team this summer.

Peterman is a 6-foot-2, 217-pound linebacker out of North Little Rock, Ark.

Peterman won’t be on scholarship right away, but chose to enroll at KU after pondering prep school. He had an early offer from Air Force and the attention of Arkansas and KU.

He comes decorated – Peterman was named the 7A defensive player of the year in Arkansas, after recording 164 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

CREWS WORK ON THE AREA SOUTHEAST OF MEMORIAL STADIUM as part of the construction of the Anderson Family Football Complex. The crews spent Saturday tearing up parking spaces.

“I’m excited about Kansas,” Peterman told Rivals. “I always followed to SEC, but the Big 12 is a big-time conference. I liked the area that Kansas is in, and I will be there on August 2.”

¢ Mangino in Wichita: KU coach Mark Mangino will speak at a Kansas football reception in Wichita on Wednesday.

The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Wichita starting at 5 p.m. The cost of the reception is $20, but walk-up registration may not be available if the event is filled up. Reservations can be made by calling Kelly Watson at 864-7195.

Mangino will be conducting a satellite football camp in Wichita earlier in the day for high school players.

¢ Dates to remember: Kansas has not announced game times for any games this fall, but special days have been designated.

Homecoming will be the weekend of Nov. 3, when Kansas is scheduled to take on Nebraska. Band Day will be Sept. 8 against Southeast Louisiana, and Family Weekend is Sept. 15 against Toledo.

¢ Heisman man?: Oklahoma State’s football program has gone to the full-court press to try and win the school’s first Heisman Trophy since Barry Sanders in 1988.

The candidate? None other than wide receiver Adarius Bowman. OSU has created a Web site – www.bowman12.com – complete with biographical information, videos, photos and more.

Guess which of Bowman’s performances gets a lot of play, too? You know it – his 13 catch, 300-yard domination of Kansas last year. Video of all four of his touchdowns from that day is available on the site.

Bowman actually played in Lawrence twice last year. He grabbed three rebounds in five minutes of action for the Cowboys’ basketball team again at Kansas in January.
