Law enforcement report

¢ Lawrence Police are investigating a report of animal cruelty in the 2500 block of Ousdahl Road. A neighbor called police last Friday to report that she heard dogs yelping from inside and could smell an odor of waste from outside the apartment.

After an apartment manager opened the residence, a Rottweiler, a boxer and two cats were reportedly found in the apartment without water. A food bowl for the cats was located on a dresser.

A third cat, still in the apartment, is being sought by Animal Control. The other pets are in the custody of the Lawrence Humane Society.

¢ Matthew Cody Thompson, 18, and Nicholas Monroe Thompson, 24, charged in connection with an incident in which eight people were beaten with baseball bats following a June 5 party, appeared Thursday in Douglas County District Court.

The Lawrence men are charged with three counts of aggravated battery and one count of aggravated burglary for the incident at Legends Place Apartments, 4101 W. 24th Place.

Each man pleaded not guilty. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday.
