Miami ? Former Kansas University forward Wayne Simien of the Miami Heat had successful arthroscopic surgery of his left knee Tuesday, Heat officials announced Thursday.

The surgery was performed by Heat team physician Harlan Selesnick. No timetable has been set for Simien’s return to action. However, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported the 6-foot-9 Simien is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Heat officials said Simien had a debridement of the left knee joint after suffering the injury while preparing for next week’s NBA summer league.

Simien, the Heat’s first-round draft pick in 2005 out of KU, contracted Salmonella bacteria last summer and was hospitalized for nine days. He returned for the start of the regular season and appeared in five games through November, but a recurrence of the illness forced him to sit out until March.

Simien appeared in a total of eight games for 93 minutes last season. He has played in 51 total games for the Heat with averages of 3.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 9.9 minutes.
