Bird’s ‘breakout game’ propels LHS

? Junior Danielle Bird had 22 a game-high points, but her coach wanted to talk about more than Bird’s scoring after Lawrence High’s girls basketball team cruised to a 61-44 victory Monday over Shawnee Mission East.

“Danielle had a breakout game,” LHS coach Kristin Mallory said. “It wasn’t just her 22 points. She did hit three threes and was 4-for-5 from the free-throw line, but she played with a lot more confidence. We’ve been trying to get her to be more aggressive offensively, so this was a really good game for her.”

It was a good game for a lot of Lions.

Abby Vestal added 12 points, and Taylor Bird had 10, and LHS (4-3) held the Lancers to single-digit scoring in the second and third quarters.

“A lot of kids played, and a lot of kids stepped up,” Mallory said. “We went to a matchup zone in the second quarter, and they did a good job with it. There were times we played some of the best defense we’ve played this year.

“And at one point, we were up 24, then they cut it to seven, so it was good to be able to get a lead and learn to hold onto it. It was a good game for us.”

The only negative for LHS might be that Sydnei Tolefree suffered a sprained ankle in the fourth quarter, but Mallory said Tolefree should play Thursday at Olathe South.
