Saint Luke’s to take part in stroke study

Saint Luke’s Mid America Brain and Stroke Institute will participate in a clinical study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of investigational cortical stimulation therapy for recovery of hand and arm function in stroke survivors.

Called EVEREST, the study is a randomized, multicenter study comparing the effects of cortical stimulation plus rehabilitation to rehabilitation alone.

Cortical stimulation therapy involves the precise delivery of low levels of electricity to the surface of the brain by an implanted stimulator system.

The study, sponsored by Northstar Neuroscience Inc., focuses on people age 21 years or older who have had an ischemic stroke at least four months before screening and suffered resulting weakness in one hand and/or arm.
