Faculty to discuss KUMC affiliation plan

A Kansas University Medical Center faculty group will meet Thursday in Kansas City to discuss concerns about the proposed affiliation between KUMC and St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

In an e-mail sent to the KUMC faculty last week, Jon Scheinman – a professor of nephrology who heads the campus chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) – questioned whether faculty rights were being considered in the plans.

He wrote that some faculty are concerned about the “mercantilism” of the KU medical school’s “search for the Holy (Cancer Center) Funding Grail.”

The AAUP will meet Thursday at KU Hospital. Scheinman said he expected about 20 faculty members to attend.
