KSU’s Hoskins takes blame

Huggins bemoans KSU's inability to score

? Accountability is a big part of what makes Kansas State’s Bob Huggins such a successful basketball coach.

David Hoskins, in many ways Huggins’ best player, proved he has learned that lesson well, when he pointed directly at the mirror in explaining Monday night’s a 71-62 loss to Kansas University at Bramlage Coliseum.

“I take the loss, and I put it all on me,” Hoskins said. “I didn’t play the way I was supposed to. I think I was a little too excited. I let it overwhelm me, and I didn’t perform. I didn’t make shots I usually make.”

Hoskins, who came into the night averaging 14.5 points, scored nine points and made just two of 15 shots from the field.

Huggins bemoaned his team’s poor shooting in general, but didn’t blame Hoskins for the loss.

He sent a lot of credit to the opposition.

“They’re good, man,” Huggins said of the Jayhawks. “They’re good. You can’t give them that many second shots. You do, and they’re going to win. : They’ve got great athletes, and when you’ve got great athletes you can make plays. They just keep throwing big athletes at you.”

K-State made just 12 of 39 two-point field-goal attempts.

“When you can’t score close, it’s hard to win,” Huggins said. “I thought we played hard. I didn’t think we played that well.”

K-State tied the score, 43-43, with 11:14 left, but that didn’t make the coughing coach feel any better.

“I’m not into moral victories and all that kind of stuff,” Huggins said. “We tried to win the game. We just have to somehow figure out how to score. I’m at wit’s end trying to figure out how to score. I thought again we had good shots. We had makeable shots.”

Senior Cartier Martin was the one Wildcats player who had his good shooting touch. He scored 19 points and hit four of 10 three-pointers.

“It’s very frustrating for me, especially because it’s my last time playing KU,” Martin said. “I didn’t get to beat them here, now we’ve got to shift and reach our goal that we’ve had all season: Get to the NCAA Tournament. I still feel we’re in a situation where we can do that.”
